Oh Blow!

For the past 18 months I've been wondering for how much longer the original exhaust system could last on a 2002 car which is now on just 75k miles.
Well, the seam at the bottom of the offside muffler is now performing one of those gundo hack mods by blowing through. It's not a big split but it's not going to grow smaller so the time has come to make decisions about replacements. So,

The existing system has lasted 13 years or 75k miles which I think is admirable.

Option 1 therefore is a straight OEM replacement.

Ted is my everyday car and not only takes me to work on those days when I still go to work, he also takes she who must be and I on trips around the country etc. I could put up with a bit more music from the back end but the last thing I want is a system which drones irritatingly at our national speed limit. He's a GT car not a track car.

Option 2 is to go to a lifetime guarantee stainless system such as fitted by Pie Performance.

Ted, a normally aspirated 996 Cab is intended to be a long-term keeper and so if I'm making changes, they need to be changes for the better and as I'm close to relying on my pension pot I'd rather spend the money once and once only.

Option 3 would involve new headers to get the best out the option 2 stainless system so something like the GT3 headers.

Tell me guys, whaddya think?

Hi Pete,

Just been through this exact same dilemma myself - my tale is here:
https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=880468

And there's a sound clip here:

It took a while to make the right decision for me, but got there in the end and am very happy with the results.

Hope this helps!

What-ho! Good thread and I appreciate the link to the thread and the sound clip.

How are you finding the system now compared to when it was fitted for you? My last stainless system changed tone slightly as it settled down over a period of miles.
Tell the truth now, what's it like at national speed limit - no droning?

Exactly my criteria as I use the car all the time - give it the big foot on the gas and wind it up, lovely rich tone, real sportscar sound, but on the motorway just a nice deep hum, not that different from the stock system at speed.

Performance wise, I think it was definitely the move to the hi-flo cats that made the difference, much cleaner pick up and increased forward going urge.

Good luck with your own endeavours - keep us posted!

Jules, thanks for that.
This is me doing a bit of forward planning in that I'd like to select a system now and have it fitted when the 80k service comes due later this year.
Hopefully I'm going to listen to a newly fitted Dansk system this morning.
