oh oh - oil spots

noticed about five or six oils spots, very small.....only noticed as i had to sweep out the leaves from the garage. hard to tell how old they are, couple looked relatively fresh, roughly the size of a 20p piece.....only the boxster has been there for the last year.

those of you who have had RMS issues - did you get one or two spots, puddles or lakes of oil ?

or am i just paranoid?

Yes you are and spots is what you get from a 'weeper'. [:)]
 
I agree with John if the spots are on the garge floor between where the rear wheels lie its a weeping RMS. Don't get paranoid about this the conventional wisdom is to monitor the leakage and unless you have start getting pools of oil under the car (unlikely) leave it for the time you need a new clutch. Then get the RMS changed but ......... don't be surprised if the spotty garage floor reappears even after having the so called "improved" seals fitted!
 
Is the RMS essentially a wierd-shaped O-ring or a cut-to-shape fibre seal or similar? Does a clutch change actually require an RMS change? Just curious really.

In my opinion, it doesn't always need to be changed when the clutch is changed - unless it's leaking/weeping. If it isn't leaking when you're changing the clutch it's probably best to leave it alone.
 
I have a weeping RMS on my tip 3.2S so obviously I'm never going to be replacing the clutch. So... do I need to do anything?

Just keep an eye on it - if it gets any worse then bite the bullet.
 
Interesting article, but they don't use the insertion tool that Porsche specifically designed to ensure the new seal was inserted to the correct depth and with equal pressure all around.

Don't lose sight of the fact that the RMS is designed to keep dirt out of the engine, its not specifically an oil seal to keep oil in - lots of 996 race cars run without any seal at all, they don't lose oil and since they are rebuilt / re oiled frequently a little chance of dirt ingress is acceptable.
