I have taken out the instrument cluster today to put back the temp guage needle and put the new bulbs in. After I have tested they all work and before putting the plaster cover back, my fingers slipped and I have accidentally clipped and broken the speedo needle (see pic)[&:] . What a plonker I am [&o][&o][&o]. I assume a call to a breaker is unavoidable and just wonder how much a used instrument cluster will cost me [&o].

This is the picture of the broken speedo needle

I'd guess that the price would vary according to the mileage on the replacement instrument cluster.....[8|]

I'd be inclined to investigate what is behind the face. (nothing to lose) Looks like you still have part of the spindle and I wonder what it is supposed to fit into behind the face. You might get lucky.

What have you done? Broken the needle or taken it off the face? If the latter I second the above, open it up and see if you can reattach -- there might be a small nut in there if you are lucky.

I have actually broken the metal pole where the plastic needle rests on. I try to describe the findings as clearly as I can ...

I have opened the face (and to take out the counter too) to realise that the broken metal pole (very thin steel rod) goes down to the middle of the device where it joins with another bigger moving metal parts via a plastic tube (could be a conector). The rest of the broken metal pole is still left in that plastice tube which is connected to the main moving device. I have a feeling that the broken metal pole is part of the whole moving device which moves as one unit. I think I will lucky just to get that metal rod spares (if its a replacement part) from VDO?

There is one for sale on ebay from a breaker for ÂŁ80. Good price if it works?

I bet Simon at PorschApart will know if it's fixable. They offer a speedo repair/ replacement service so must have opened dozens

Try PH sportscars as well. I can't imagine they'd go to the trouble of fixing non functioning instrument clusters sothey might have some knackered ones around that you will be able to pick up for a pittance. I noticed my speedo needle is slightly bent at the very end, looking back through my maintenance history I found a receipt from a specialist that dismantled the binnacle to fix/replace a faulty temp guafe. Bloody hamfisted neanderthal! I've also noticed that some of the numbers on my odometer are dirty, he must have gone in there with fithy fingers the size of butchers choice suasages!!

Scott,

I will give them a call and other breakers a call on Monday to see if there are knackered ones but working speedo. When I took out the speedo face and the counter, I noticed that there some resistors shouldered onto the VDO speedo unit which shouldn't be a big task. Ideally, I just want to replace the speedo unit, my last resort is to replace the whole instrument cluster.

Its just a shame that I thought I have now found an alternative (and cheaper) solution for fixing the common dim instrument lights problem. Please read my other thread (http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=272614) for results.

Charles,
I have got a spare instrument cluster, but the fuel gauge and volt meter dials dont work (as i swapped them from my current set). As far a i know the speedo and rev counter are ok though. You are more than welcome if you want them. PM me.

Cheers

Hi all,

The cluster has arrived today, thanks Richard.

I have now replaced my damaged speedo with the Lux one and it works now. [:)] The only problem now is the speedo is showing a slower speed (about 5-8 mph slower) because I have kept my speed plate (and the circuit boards) which has a slightly different mph mark from the Lux and have a top speed of 180 instead og 160.

What I am not sure if the spindles and/or the two small circuit boards (part of the speedo module) are different between the Lux and S2.[8|]

I assume I have to be careful now when driving thru speedcam or replace my speed plate with yours. [;)]

My speedo needle when idle rests well below the lowest mark (see photo) - I may need to adjust it. Is it right? Please advice

Its all fixed now. The speedo needle is now aligned with 0 mph with the S2 speedo dial (after some careful manipulation this time [:)]) and shows correct mph.
My conclusion is the circuit boards in the S2 speedo module is different from the Lux where the spline (spindle) part is the same on both.

Nice one Charles. Glad you got it sorted. I'm going to do the dash illumination this weekend - I'll let you know how i get on!
