Oil Air Seperator - using oil

My S2 has been drinking more oil recently, accompanied by a bit of smoke at revs under throttle - bad news I presumed, probably rings on their way out (has done 236k though!). Quick compression test didn't show up anything too concerning however, then came across some posts on Rennlist that suggests when the seals in the oil / air seperator go bad, oil vapour gets drawn up in large quantities & dumped into the throttle body via the breather line. (e.g. see http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=204031&referrerid=20449 and http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=271367&highlight=oil+seperator ) Anyone have any views / experience on this?

Well even a good air oil seperator doesn't seem to be particularly effective judging by the amount of oil coating the inside of my intake pipes. You could try fitting an oil catch can and monitor the amount of oil it catches to confirm if it is your air oil seperator. I'm not sure how they work to be honest. Have you changed the grade of oil you are using? Maybe that could be the cause of increased consumption?

If compression is ok it might be the turbo bearings??

I think thats my problem anyway as the oil consumption seems to be relative to how I drive. I`ve taken it easy on a long journey trying not to use lots of boost and the consumption was negligible. Driving like I normally do I lose a litre in 500 miles [&:] however I`ve asked people following me if I have blue smoke when accelerting and all they see is a puff of black (petrol) when I boot it. It makes over the factory standard bhp even with some boost loss so I dont think its the rings.

I think that might be normal characteristics for our cars Paul. My car looses very little oil under normal driving conditions but on a track day the oil level will go from max on the dipstick to min on the dipstick in one day. A nice reminder for those who take their cars on the track to take a litre or so of oil with you.

I've got one of those 9xx recirculating catch cans on my list but never seem to get round to it. I don't like the idea of the vent to atmosphere catch cans.
