Oil and Exhaust worries - bit of help please!

First of all - hello all. Kind of need some some advice please.

I know there are countless oil pressure worries and believe me I did search around first!! But alas I have this big cloud above my head and this nagging wallet cramp that i just can't shake.

Allow me to paint a picture. Replaced my camshaft and all other bits that go with the job.

Now when given some welly up and past 3000rpm smoke comes out the back. When the car has warmed up and idling in traffic it's sitting at 0.5-1 which i know the manual says is acceptable, but this evening the warning light flickered on? I checked the level and it's fine. I've been monitoring it since i picked it up from the garage and it isn't go down that fast.

The only thing that doesn't make me think head gasket is water level is fine, smoke isn't blue and it doesn't smoke on run off.

One suggestion is that the valve setting maybe wrong?

Has anybody had similar experiences? Any light shined would be really appreciated.

cheers guys

First of all what type of 944 is it? I'm guessing a 16V as they are the most likely to have camshaft trouble.

You say 'since i picked it up from the garage' so I am guessing they did the work. First thing is to take it back there as something has not been put back together correctly. When warm all 944 should idle at around 3 bar, when driving along it should be around 5 bar. Plus or minus 0.5 bar is ok but not down to 0.5-1 bar []

I haven't done anything major like this myself so all I can offer is some speculation after reading others problem with oil pressure after a rebuild. IIRC it was the bolt holding a pulley onto the crank. It has to be torqued up way, way high or it spins loose as the belts whirr round it, so the oil pump can't do its work. Take this with a pinch of salt though as its just my hearsay (which can be dangerous, though well intentioned)

This would not explain your clouds of smoke through the exhaust though, so it sounds like something major has been forgotten.

Bert Gear at www.berlyn-services.co.uk is the 944 Register tech rep and he could offer advice, and also ask a question on the www.jzmachtech.com tech forum. Jonas and Steve there are happy to give advice.
