Oil and lights questions.

Would the Members kindly advise me what make, quantity and grade i.e. 0-40W of oil I should use for my 993 Targa Tiptronic "S"? Porsche has always recommended Mobil 1, but now the Porsche Centre is trying to sell me Porsche Classic Oil 10-60W at £75.00 for a 5 litre can.

Also would you please advise me if the light control switch is illuminated and the gear selector panel on the centre console is illuminated as both are unlit and are difficult to see at night?

I would appreciate any help fellow members can offer.

To all members have a good Christmas and a fabulous 2015.

Kind regards,

Lynn & Steve.

2nd post and you ask to most argued over question of all ! :- )

I ran Mobil 1 0-40W in my 993 for years with zero issues and currently run Volvoline VR1 Racing 20W-50 only because my indi uses that one and I respect his advice (and run it in my other earlier cars too so only need one can lying around). I have also over the years used 5W-10 and 10W-40 in various 993s I have had.

I can't really add any more but would also be interested to hear from other owners of 993s what they are currently recommended.

Ian.

I've been using Mobil 1 Motorsport formula in mine it's a 10w60 for years, whithout problems.

I think it's fairly academic who's label is on the front, there's only a couple of places on the planet where this can be made. More important is keeping the level right and changing it every 5-8K miles or every 2 years whichever comes soonest.

Been using semi synth 10-40 in mine for nearly 10 years - never loses a drop between changes, always been fine[:)].
(also same as other cars, so just one grade needed[;)])

now the Porsche Centre is trying to sell me Porsche Classic Oil 10-60W at £75.00 for a 5 litre can.
...they have to try, I suppose.

Hello Lynn

Have used semi-synth Castrol Magnatec 10-40W for years in 3 x 90s Porsches, 10s of 1000s of miles, all fine.
And these days, use that too in a diesel engine, also all fine. [:)]

As to the 'light control switch' - if you mean the pull switch on the dash, yes, that should be illuminated.

Pass on the 'gear selector panel' - I have a manual - but I'd gamble at a 'yes' [;)]

I have used 10-60 Mobil 1 since their Classic Oil started to be recommended by Porsche.

Read on an US forum that it was the same stuff but a lot cheaper !!

Thanks for the Halfords Link, it's at a very good price and just double checked it's suitability for 964 & 993 engines re ZDDP levels and it is fine at 1300ppm.

Happy Christmas and new year , I have used 10/40 semi syn:0/40 full syn with no problems although I do top up from time to time ( no leaks) but the frequency of change and the manner in which the engine is used will have a far greater effect on wear and oil consumption than oil type if we're staying within the common oils used. The Porsche branded 10/60 is rather expensive and you could pay close to half for an equivalent oil if you do your homework. I change my oil once a year no matter what( I never get near the mileage limit) .At less than 5k annual and a change once a year ,I bet it wouldn't hurt the engine if I used castrol gtx,a real old fashioned oil!
Regarding the main light switch ,it should be illuminated by a 1.2 watt cap less panel bulb if I recall correctly.
The gear lever position is shown by the speedometer display in tiptronic 964/993 models and I think it isn't illuminated down at the lever itself, the implication, that the operator looks at the instrument to guide what the hand does .

Fwiw I use castrol Edge 10w60. Comes in around £33/4L when bought on sale for places like euro carparts. Certainly no point in paying £75 from Porsche although not so easy if you go to them for your servicing.

i have mobil 10/40 in mine for the last 4 years or more now !
my where does the time go ?
i do at odd times top up but hardly ever realey.

I would like to thank everyone for their help and comments regarding my question of which oil to use.

I finally decided on Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 10-60W Motorsport Formula, as I ascertained that this is the oil the Porsche are purchasing and rebranding it as Porsche Classic oil at vast expense. I purchase 10 litres for £81.00 including delivery.

Porsche Centre Swindon are in the process of carrying out a major service, brake fluid change, ATF change, along with a few minor modifications and rectifications. I would highly recommend their work and their prices are very good for classic Porsche's. Give them a try.

I look forward to seeing lots 993 members, when I attend an event in the future with my beautiful Targa.

Kind regards,

Lynn.
