Oil Change - Filter Replacement

Changed my oil on the weekend but after draining the old oil I got stuck with the filter which I couldn't get loose as didn't have a proper filter removal tool (didn't realise how little access to these things there is!). Needed to use the car so had to carry on and put the new oil in, so now have nice new oil but an old filter.

Was only a 6 month change, having had a full service 6 months and only about 3k miles ago.

My question is - is it vital that I still change the filter or is it ok(ish!) to wait till the next full service in 6 months given the low mileage that its been in for. If I do change it, I presume I need to drain the oil again, change the filter and refill?
 
Oh, at this point I'd just leave it as is. A couple reasons you want to change the filter is to get rid of the dirty oil in it and have fresh filter media. If you weren't dumping sand into the oil or chewing up bearings or cylinder walls you should be fine on the filter media.

Start searching for a "cap" style filter wrench for next time. It is basically a big shallow socket that fits the flats on the end of the filter. You stick in a 3/8" drive extension to turn. These have a very low profile so easy to pull out of the confined space.

Then, because our filters are mounted assbackwards, you are going to drip oil as you take it out. Get a plastic grocery or garbage bag (with no holes in it) and position it around the underside of the filter and mounting block to catch any oil drips. Flop the filter in the bag when fully unscrewed. Your rubber sway bar bushings will thank you.[:D]

Dont want to put a spanner in the works but with modern oils i wouls say that its more important to chnage the filter nd top off the oil than change th eoil ond leave the filter. The properties of the oil will not break down over 12k miles but the filter could easily become less efficient over 6000 miles. If the filter gets clogged then it willl just bypass the filter and you will getunfiltered oil running round your engine (extreme case) i am not saying that will happen over 12k miles but the possibility is there. Priority should always be to change filter, usually if you are going to that trouble then changing the oil is not much more.

Just my thoughts on it, but saying that i very very much doubt that it would do any harm to wait another 6k miles.

 
I really doubt he has a problem with clogging the filter up enough to cause bypass. We sawed some used Mahle filters in half for the hell of it one day. Ok, we were drunk. With a good motor I can't imagine bypass kicking in on a filter that only has 12.000 miles on it.
 
.......and another thing to note is that the official S2 service interval is 12k or yearly, there is no 6k service.

I always change mine at 6k tho - just to be on the safe side [:D].

Greg, I think you'll be fine until the next service. S2s dont mess up the oil like a Turbo does, mine stays clear for quite a while after a change

Didnt say he would have a problem with clogging filters. Perdonally i doubt it would clog after 20k miles let alone 6k miles, just makeing the point that changing the filter is probably the more important service issue rather than the oil. Some people will change there oil every 4k miles but still leave the filter change till the regualr service time say 12k miles.

Unless you are doing a load of very very short journeys with the engine never getting warmed up, i doubt that you need to ever do anything other than what the manufacture recommends.
