oil change/service

Hi all,

I'm about to take my 964 on holiday (the girlfriend is coming too!) to France, I want to get the car serviced/checked over before we go, it has done 74,000 miles as is due an oil change, the key question is, will my mechanic be able to do it or will I need to take it to a Porsche specialist, what is involved in the oil change? Many thanks in advance.

Graham,

I think a lot depends on what you think needs doing and how good your mechanic is.

The oil change is not difficult - but you do need to know a few of the nuances of the 911 in general and the 964 specifically to ensure it gets done right. At least if you go to a specialist you shouldn't be bothered with putting right an oil overfill. The oil change itself is pretty normal - although there is a LOT of oil. It needs to be drained from the oil tank as well as the crankcase. The engine needs to be hot enough for the oil thermostat to be open - else none of the oil in the cooler system will be drained. Punch a hole in the oil filter to aid draining - otherwise your hand gets scalded with the rush of red hot oil!!!

Make sure you put AT LEAST 6 litres of new oil in before starting the engine, warm it up on tickover until the thermostat is open and top up the level as required. Don't even THINK of dip sticking the oil when the engine is cold or not running!!!!

How long is it since it was previously serviced?? A basic 6,000 mile service is little more than an oil and filter change, but much more mileage and there are several more things which need doing. The 24,000 mile service includes valve clearances which involves removing the exhaust etc. etc.

Regards

Dave
