Oil Consumption - 4.0 GTS / GT4

A bit suprised at the oil consumption on my Cayman GTS 4.0 - 0.5l in first 2,000 miles. Supplying OPC seem to think that's ok but interested to see what others are using?

Yes, mine uses oil too. I have heard from quite a few other owners that they are using oil as well. It does seem that it’s normal for this engine.

Yes, mine also used quite a lot in first 2500 miles, probably 1/2 to 3/4 ltr. Then dropped. Still using a little, but a friend also has a new GT4 and experiencing similar use. Make sure you use the new spec Mobil 1 (with green lable) not the normal Mobil 1.

Thanks - good point about the correct oil - I nearly bought the Mobil 1 FS with the Gold Top but fortunately saw this post... www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1092211

Mine too, 1l in 4,000 miles. Apparently all normal. I got the green Mobil 1, rang and asked before I put it in.

Does the owners manual provide sufficient information regarding selection of the correct oil ?

Not really. It just says that it should be Porsche C40 specification.

Err, so it tells you exactly what you need to know. C40 is green label, A40 the gold label.

Must admit that although I agree with you that it does say what you need but there is significant room for mistakes to be made. I only found out by accident that 3L BMW 6's needed non sulphur oil to prevent damage to the nikasil linings by accident. I feel like there should be a notice on the filler cap that is very specific as to what should go down that hole. Yes people should be careful but if you did significant damage due to putting in the gold label rather than the green the punishment doesn't really fit the crime.

Very true, but surely common sense would dictate that if the car is new to you that you check the handbook for the correct oil spec before putting any in? I would never expect what I put in one car to be OK in another.

Maybe that's just me though!

Yes I agree hence ringing the service desk at my OPC when the "I need oil light" came on but we are in a world where people have to be told not to take horse de-wormer so asking what oil to put in is likely way beyond some. I suppose we would assume the vast majority of Porsche owners understand what they bought so would be cautious but I'm not very confident.

As an aside my car flagged up I need oil 45 miles after it left the OPC with me having been emailed to say they had completed a health check. Must admit I would have expected them to check the oil as part of the health check but ho hum.

That's pretty poor! Not a great advert for the OPC...
My thinking but when I rang to ask what to put in it the reply to the comment on the health check suggested that no-one in the history of ever had actually checked the oil as part for a vehicle health check! Car is great, Porsche ownership experience way behind BMW in my experience so far.

OPC knowledge is somewhat woeful at times. When the oil level warning first flashed up at me, I called at Hull OPC as we were passing to buy some oil for my GTS4.0 Fortunately I had looked up in the Good To Know app because they tried to sell me some A40 oil, and didn’t even have any C40 in stock. not so impressive

I have just done the first 2.7k miles in 4.0 and “used” the full oil gauge which is almost 1 litre (instruction says it’s 1 litre but it’s actually a bit less bottom to top). I do a lot of short trips so unfortunately more cold starts than an average driver - so based on anecdotal norm of 0.5 litre per 2k, it’s probably about right as I expect cold starts burn more oil.

I recently completed 2700 miles in Europe including time on track at Spa, many mountain passes, and lots of de-restricted Autobahn. Car has now done 11k miles and over trip used about 0.5 to 0.75 ltr, so it seems these engines continue to use some oil. Previous GT3/GT4 and 981GTS used virtually zero.

Yep, the new 4.0 design is such that it uses more oil than the older engines and it's perfectly normal/expected.

There is an oil recommendation sticker on the drivers side reach hatch frame. Says use Mobil C40.

I've added about 750mls of oil in 4700 miles. seems to have settles a bit now but the electronic dip stick is woeful. One minute it says it's 3/4 full then the next it's 1/2 full. I always follow the manual's instructions on measuring oil. Warm, level, turn off for at least 1 minute then measure. If you open the rear hatch it does reset the oil reading though (apparently).
