Oil Consumption on new S

My 2004 S, now has approx. 1.1K miles and I have to admit since it passed the 1K mark I've been driving it rather harder - i.e. going up to rather more than the 4,000 rpm limit a stuck to during running in. Slightly worryingly the oil level (as shown on the digital gauge) is now at about half - or even a bar under. It's been gradually dropping for the last 300 miles or so (and no not onto the garage floor!) - The handbook mentions that oil consumption maybe slightly excessive during the first 1.5K miles - but my old 2.7 never did this when it was new - anyone had the same problem?

I think I'm going to get a couple of litres of mobil 1 pretty soon if it gets much lower!

Thanks

Think your right foot is the cause of this problem. Rev the nuts out of the engine and not only will you burn gas but the slippy stuff as well. Check consumption figures in your hand book.

As a comparison Porsche reckon 1.5L/1000km to be acceptable for a GT3. Mind you we don't do the skool run or Tescos in the GT3!

Many manufacturers stipulate that up to 1L per 1000 km's is ok, but that is crazy. Imagine that you fill 15 litres of oil between servicing (Based on 15,000km service intervals) and they say it is normal!! That is more than the entire oil capacity of the car! The figure they give is a safety net so they don't have to replace or repair the engine under warranty.

Mercedes have the exact same tolerance figure, but if you argue long enough they will repair it under warranty. Strangely, Mercedes lower the figure to 0.8 L/1000kms if you live in America because the Americans don't accept that putting one litre of oil in the car every time you fill up your fuel tank is normal [8|]

So my advice is that after running in your car note how much oil you need to put in and at what mileage. Ask your OPC to check it out if it seems excessive.

I do not trust the digital oil level gauge on my new 2.7.

With the engine cold and the car parked on the flat in exactly the same place mine has ranged in chronological order from full, to half full, to almost full, to one bar over full. It had me going thinking that I might have a water leak.

Checking with the manual jobbie in the boot, it has used some oil in 2500miles but nothing of concern.

Chris .... I have used 1/2 litre of oil in apprx 3500 miles .... I would guess 2800 miles would be motorway journeys and the balance town use .......

Thanks for the responses guys.

Gary's probably right to some degree re. the right foot pressure - although I've not been that hard on it (honest!). Today however the digital gauge varied between half full this morning to 1 bar off full when I left the gym. This afternoon I bought a litre of Mobil 1 (£11 in Halfords!!) - but now I'm worried about overfilling it!. Time to take the advice and do it the old fashioned way - i.e. check the dipstick!

Thanks again
