Oil Consumption

I am new to Porsche and on the steep part of the learning curve so please excuse my ignorance.

I have a 993 C2S with 36K. How much oil should it use in routine road use ? I reckon I have used ~500mls in ~1500 miles. Is this normal ? I'm used to cars that don't use a drop between services.

Thanks,

Stephen

Thanks

Yes, obsessional about method of checking.
I'll look at the handbook again but I don't think it says much about the quantity of oil usage to expect, just how to check it.

Stephen

I doubt you should worry. My 90k miles 993 actually uses almost no oil - I've been impressed with that in my 6 months of ownership - but the service history shows it has used oil in the past and had a gasket replaced to solve an oil leak about 8k miles ago. Most people seem to report regular top-ups which isn't surprising as it relies on air and oil to cool the engine.

Welcome to the joyous world of 993 ownership!

It really depends on how you drive the car, higher revs normally causes higher usage of oil. It also hepls if you keep the oil just below the
maximum mark on the dip stick.

would be about right......

although in reality oil consumption can be a tad erratic.......

I had a month & 1000 miles of normal driving and got through 1.5 litres

and in the next month I did another 1000 miles with a track day and a trip to the Nurburgring and back and only got through 0.5 litre !

Oil consumption is just a factor of 911 ownership......

I'm currently topping up with 5W-40. and steering well clear of the leak prone 0W-40 (well on my car anyway!)

Doesn't seem an unreasonable amount to me. It's pretty much what my C2S is doing and what Porsche considers to be normal useage.

It should also be noted there are alternatives to Mobil 1 that don't hurt the wallet in the same way, although I DO NOT want to ignite the oil argument again!!![;)]

Yes, same as sundeep993,we do several trips to the ring each year and on the trip weekends(1500 miles)it only drinks 0.5l of oil,but around town it goes up to 1.5 per 1500 miles.
Lesson......993s love a good thrashing(after warm up!!!!!)

0-40W? My 993 guzzled mobil1 on the Scotland jaunt last year. Local mechanic reckoned the mobil1 was too thin for such an old engine.

as a rider to this thread.......my 97 2'S', 50k on the clock, is due for service. i want to supply my own mobil1, 0-40, but my independant tells me the car requires thicker stuff..... which they will supply.

is this the case, or a ploy to relieve me of even more of my hard earned???

I use Mobil 1 15w/50 grade, car has done 62k and on average needs topping up with about 2L between oil changes (every 5 - 6k). Average driving, some of the weekly commute, a few longer runs 200 miles + and some more enthusiastic driving occaisionally.

I would have thought that whatever grade you decide on your independent should allow you to provide your own.

The subject of oil for 993s seems to be a major arguing point. My independent also has forthright views on what grade to use (i.e. thicker oil than recommended by Porsche). I am basically just confused.

For what it is worth I am running Motul 300V 10W-40 during summer (when the car is driven hard and trackdays occur) and either 0W-40 or 5W-40 during winter when the car is hardly ever driven.

Ian.. now that is what AmD said to me.. so I have 10W-40 in mine at the moment..... and very confused as well !!

although I might be getting a switch for the oil cooler fan, so I can turn the fan on, during those high temp runs !

although those Oiler as recommended by Oilman (simon) is what I will try for another 6k miles at my next oil change in 5k and counting !

Just for info, check out p-car.com. There is a 'how to' on there regarding a manual over-ride switch which is quite good. Looks pretty stock too, which is always a bonus!

As for oil, R7 (Yorkshire) has a visit planned this Wednesday to Miller Oils. They actually manufacture the stuff, so if I'm able to make it and can get some information I'll try and post it up.

Not too sure where you can put that one! There are, however, a couple of places on the instrument binnacle that will accomodate something a little smaller. If you run your finger along the area above the speedo and tacho at the same level as the wiper delay knob is, you will feel some small indentations that seem to be blanks for optional equipment. Just a suggestion for a factory type installation.

Regards.

the area around the instruments is an option for a smaller switch....

although for the larger one, I was kind of thinking in the spacer between the ignition switch and the steering column.....
