Oil Consumption

Have bought a low mileage 944 Turbo which I a very happy with but it does seem to like Oil. Topped it up on wednesday prior to a track day (1/2 litre) but it needed another litre after a morning around Silverstone (say 60 miles to get there and 150 miles around the track at maxi chat). The exhaust seems black & sooty too. Is this normal, any ideas?
