Oil cooler blower not turning off

couple of days ago, I parked up and the fan in the back didn't stop. Now I know when it's hot it sometimes stays on a bit, so I didn't think about it. I went out 15mins later and it was still going. I tried turning the engine on and off to see if that would reset something but it carried on. I checked and the internal blowers weren't on and the engine fan wasn't turning, so I figured it must be the oil blower. I pulled fuse #2 and it stopped, and when I put the fuse back in it didn't restart. I didn't use the car for a few days, but I tried it again today and it did the same.

I can use the car, all I need to do is pop the bonnet and remove and reinsert the fuse, but it needs sorting.

Is there an oil temperature sensor that tells the fan it needs to run? I'm guessing the sensor has gone. If so, how much of a job is it to replace it and how much does it cost?

Any help muchly appreciated.

Have you checked the earth connection? I had this once after a (so called) service and they had not tightened the connection.
 
This sound like the problem I had. The solution to my problem was was a sensor lead disconected . The sensor in question is mounted in the plastic moulding that ducts air to the cabin. Try checking this sensor is properly conected or that the sensor is working. The conection can be clearly seen in the picture in the link below. Bottom left had corner. 1/3rd up, 1/4 in

There's a sensor and a resistor on the ducting that switch the rear blower on Johnny. Can't see it being a lose connection as pulling the fuse wouldn' re-set things. Sounds like one or both have gone, I would replace both as when one goes it can apparantly cause the other to fail.

Part numbers are 96461655002 (resistor) and 96465912000 (sensor). Sixty quid the pair a couple of years ago, so probably about a hundred today [:D]

I had this on our 1994 cab, fan ran all the time - kept killing the battery til we foudn the temp sensor was faulty.

from memory - this is my layman's description:

on the photo that Rsimon posted, on upper left hand side of engine bay - you can see the open grill that lets air in,
look down below that, follwo the black air duct 'pipe' coming towards you ( which then returns more vertically downwards - and you get to a metal bracket fixed to ducting ( gthe bracket has elect connectors fixed to it ),

slightly below the metal bracket, and to the left of that - there's a black plastic tube sticking out of the air ducting ( bit like 1/2 a black biro ) , with wires running into the end of it - this is the sensor - it is a twist / bayonet fit,

disconnect the cables running ot the 'biro'
you twist it ( 'fraid can't say if it is clockwise or anti ) and then you just pull it out,
and then plug in the new one.
Takes about 1 minute.

Think we found euro car parts or german and swedish stocked them 3 or so years ago.
Don't forget your club 10% if buying from a main dealer!

sorry - just realised my 'biro' description won't help you - as that is what I think the sensor looks like - but you only see that once you've unpluged it.

So - the bit you unplug is where wires are 'plugged into' the air ducting ( sticks out at approx. 90 degrees out from the ducting, just to the left and slightly below that metal clamp on the air ducting.
