Oil Cooler Fan

Having sent in the car for its service, I am told the oil cooler fan is not working at all, although I seem to remember they said it was initially but that it was grating on the cowling. After checking all reasons why (the car has been there since Tuesday) they cannot find what is causing this.
This is slightly worrying on the basis that this is a Porsche specialist and if they are expecting me to pay their hourly labour rate for investigation then this is going to be a problem.

2 points here;

1. has anyone had a similar issue with their fan and any quick fixes?
2. I am slightly concerned that this being a specialist cannot find the problem. Will they find it? and is it reasonable to charge for the investigation?

Any comments would be appreciated as it looks like I will have to take a view when I speak to them tomorrow.

Thanks

Seb

Its a very simple job to isolate the fan itself ,you can check the fan by disconecting it after getting to it via the wheel arch liner and powering it up with a power probe.
If the cowling is stopping it,then you need to find out why,has it been in an accident or even just thumped a high kerb.
2nd hand fans are available on ebay and are easy to fit.
Where are you based,if your near Cheshunt,Herts 5mins junc25 M25 it would take me about 15mins to check.

Hi Dan, nowhere near I am afraid but thanks for he offer. If its as simple as everyone says it is why hasnt it been sorted out I wonder?!

I have just been told all is okay, it was the temperature sensor and relay that was faulty. Is this not one of the 1st things that is checked?

Makes me wonder sometimes.
I try my best to teach myself and find out ways of doing things,not because i am a tight arse,but because you dont seem to be able to trust the so called professionals[>:]

The fan shroud on mine was touching the fan, found this was because with age the inserts in the shroud corrode (same as the ones on the cam covers) and the shroud distorts. Was also not helped by the fact that the oil cooler had a small weep and the oil had affected the shroud plastic. The new shroud was suprisingly cheap (about £18).

The ballast resistor and relay are both common failures and I would have thought the speciallist would have checked these first. The ballast resistor only affects the slow speed running of the fan and can be checked by "frigging" the contacts on the relay. They should have known this and carried out this check first, changing the ballast resistor is not easy as it lies right at the front of the fan shroud.
