Oil filler neck question

I was just wondering if anybody knew anything about the oil filler neck on the 944 (or oil separator if you like)?

I removed mine from the engine as when I filled it with oil it never drained down into the engine and caused the breather pipe to inhale a load of oil and turn it into the nice mayo type goo in the pipe joining the AFM and throttle body. Turned out that the bottom hole was completed clogged and also the pipe leading down into the sump.

The thing I wanted to know is whether there's supposed to be something inside the cylinder part or is it just a lump of plastic with no contents? The fact it had completed clogged itself and the engine would suggest that there was something inside it once but it had collapsed and the fact a new one costs £70 would suggest that also.

Would it make much of a difference to run it with my now unclogged but empty separator or should I bite the bullet and add a new one to my already hefty shopping list?

Mine was empty when I took mine off - As far as I'm aware thats how they are. I've read of some people putting things similar to wirewool in to help condense the oil.
Don't bother getting a new one. I'd guess the blockage was years of crap buildup and maybe someone dropping something in the filler?

That's good to hear. I already have new seals for it as the old ones were just leaking oil everywhere so it should be good to go.

Just a new sump and oil cooler gaskets, water pump, belts, engine mounts, and clutch to buy and I can put it back together [:)]

Got mine from Exeter OPC. There are two different sizes and both are available.

I think the smaller fatter ones are the seals used on mine which is an early car which means I have a set of larger seals doing nothing. If you want them email me your address and I'll stick em in an envelope as they're no use to me.

I replaced mine too last year, got them from Exeter OPC as well, there are 2 sizes, one for the top one for the bottom. I also popped the lid off and changed the o-ring in there - I had to make it myself though as Porsche don't sell it.

Hmm, I'm sure they were different, top one was smaller than the bottom one, unless I'm thinking of something else...
