Oil & Filter - Using wheel ramps?

Guest

Here's the problem:

I don't have nice even ground to change my 993's oil & filters every year. This makes the p-car method of raising the whole car on axle stands somewhat dodgy & I quite like having a normally-shaped head & rib cage! [&:]

Could I get some nice strong, wide ramps & drive the rear wheels up onto these to do the job? Would this mean that a lot of oil was left in the car? I'll undo the pipe as well each time & do it properly....[8|] I only do 1-2000 miles a year & don't really hammer the car.

I'd regard myself as an experienced amateur mechanic & not an idiot, and would prefer to do the work myself mainly because I enjoy working on these cars.

These look nice: http://www.restorationramps.co.uk/ [8D]

How much oil comes out (exactly) when changing the oil if the car is level? Maybe I could compare this with what I get out using ramps??

Comments appreciated, thanks folks!

Cheers John. These look promising. How high are they? Have you changed oil & filters on a 993 with them? Can you get them through the main website (www.dynateck.co.uk) then?

I wonder if there will be anything on offer at the show on Sunday....[8|]

Roddy, try this link and scroll about half way down and full description.

Raises car about 6-7 inches and enables you to do the small engine oil filter - the big filter at the oil tank needs the rear wheel removed to get clearance to do it easily but I have done it with the wheel in place using the ramps but fiddly.

Thanks John.

What volume of oil comes out when you do an oil change with the car level? I think I'll compare this to what comes out with the car on ramps.[;)]

Cheers, Roddy

You have me there Roddy - all I can say is "a lot" !! Some people go to endless lengths to get the last bit out by disconnecting oil lines etc.

I don't hold with this and just do the best I can. Mines done 166k now and in rude health.

Regards

If your oil is on the highest point on the dipstick you will be getting approx 10L of oil out of the dry sump tank, crankcase and filters. I put 10L back in and it fills it to the top mark again when hot. The whole system holds about 12.5L but the rest of it is trapped in the oil pipes, thermostat and front oil cooler.
