Oil for 993RS

I am currently using Mobil 1 in my 1995 RS. My OPC (Swindon) tell me that it's a very thin oil hence I get the small oil leaks that the car currently has. They tell me unofficially that Mobil 1 does not suit the gaskets on my car. This sound accurate?

Does anyone have any advice on alternatives??

My car is ex Hong Kong, Polar Silver and is chassis number 390837.

This is the first time I have used the Forum and despite what it says I am a PCGB member and the car is registered with Mr Howells!

Never had that prob with 993 , any older cars can get corroded cam covers, is that where leaks are ? .............ther are various grades of Mobil ie 15 40 might help..............
 
Both cam covers have been replaced, I have a small leak from the main seal.

I have owned 7 air cooled 911's and they have all leaked oil slightly!
 
Think u ll find thats very little to do with viscosity of oil , though thicker may help, maybe next time u do a clutch it can be sorted , have had those leak on my various 993 derivatives , dont know where u are but i use Jaz , next to Wembley Stadium they can fix that for less than a million pounds if its that bad or it worries u

Curently using 5W/40 fully synthetic and change it every 3-5k miles, not quite as thin as the 0W/40 Mobil...which helps.

Personally I consider 15W/40 is not thin enough at start up, so wouldn't entertain it myself ;)

Cam cover leaks are easy to spot and unikely to corrode being made of plastic....mine were fine but replaced gaskets and new bolts anyhow recently,,£20 for parts from OPC.
 
I use Silkolene Pro R or Pros. The Pro R is 15w 50 and the Pro S 10w 50. Both grades are set out in the handbook for summer use.

I chose these oils as I was recommended and used Mobil 1 Racing when my 964 RS was looked after by Tech 9,

I have since used them in my 993 Carrera and now my 993 RS.

I think for winter use they are quite thick but for summer use I do not see an issue. How many cold starts do you do? The real benefit is the 100c rating of 50; this means it is thicker at the temps you reach on a hard run/trackday. The 993 is an old engine design and has no issues with the thicker oils.

The Silkolene is fully ester based, which also clings better during longer term periods of little use.

The other benefit of using the 10 or 15W grades is that the gap between the cold and hot viscosity is kept sensible. This means the oil has less additives in which means its performance degrades less quickly. A 0W 40 for instance is a 0W oil with additives to make it work like a 40 at 100C. A 0W 60 has a much larger gap and so uses more additives. I understand a 0W 60 often will behave like a 4o weight oil after a few trackdays as the additive package disappears.

If I used my car everyday I would use a 0W40 as the need for extreeme temperature performance would be outweighed by the benefits of better cold start protection.

I think it is a pay your money take your choice issue as there are many views and no absolute answer.

I have been using the pro race r 15/50 oil in my rs for the last 4 years,also in all my racers,with out doubt the best oil,the proof is in engine wear.It saves you money in the long run,can be purchased at sensible prices from Fuchs lubricants rather than Demon robbers etc.Also the silkolene silk trans gear oil is also top notch for your box!
 
i would have thought that steve bull in devizes would be closer then jaz? used to work at dick lovetts for years 01380 725444
