Oil for 997 Turbo

Morning Guys,
Just got the latest edition of Total 911 and there was a very interesting article about oil. I always use the Mobil 1 0W-40 but reading article the general consensus is certainly among independents that the 'judicial' choice for the turbo is 5W-50. Has anyone else done this and found any material difference? I usually idle my car for a t least 2-3 mins after a run so never get any of the puff of smoke on start up sometimes associated with turbos. Can I start to introduce 5W-50 to my engine for top ups if I need them or shall I just go and buy 10 litres and get my OPC to do an oil change? Lastly how much is an oil change and filter change roughly if I supply my own?
Apologies if this has been covered already.
cheers
Ben

I only use 0W-40 in both my Turbo and my Audi with a Turbo'ed Lambo engine in it

...as does my OPC.

5W-50 is on the approved list but I see no reason to use anything other than what it came with (0W-40) in our climate.
It doesn't affect the "puff" on start up as that is more a feature of the flat six with a little oil occasionally seeping by the piston rings at rest which I reckon will happen (or not in the case of mine) whichever oil you put in.
If you did want to go ahead with a change then I would contact the PC and ask them if it's ok to bring along your own - not all will accept that arrangement- and how much including filter. Off the top of my head I would guess you are looking at about an hour's labour (although it would take less!)
Not having read the article what is the rationale for the independents consensus that a slightly thicker oil would be better?

Edit - Lengthy, sometimes funny and interesting variety of views on this thread from another forum on the merits (or otherwise) of 5w-50 v 0W40 in a 997 turbo!

For those getting their Mobil 0-40 changed ( and the final comment in the article was to replace what you currently have with the same if it is still under warranty) I note that Halfords are offering 1litre for £16.99 or 5 litres for £39.99!
I have read that 8 litres are needed for the current generation.

Hi Andy

Spoke to my OPC today about the turbos 1st service, warranty check etc and I was told to get 9 litres so need to get to Halfords as £80 seems a bargain.

Thanks for replies and thanks for the rennlist forum - god I thought things got heated on here a few times...A friend of mine that does rallying said similar thing as one guy on that forum - Porsche test oils to destruction so they would have no reason to suggest the incorrect or a a less efficient one. Just reading that last Total 911 mag got me thinking about independents who dont necessarily have to tow the Porsche line. Tim from Opie oils also told me that 5w-50 contains a lot of additives that are usually broken down by the engine fairly quickly. Anyway lit seems Mobil have now discontined their 5W-50 now anyway.
Cheers all
