Oil for turbo and also service kit

Millers CFS 15W50 NT in mine. Works great. 10W40 should be fine in a NA engine but I would prefer a 10W50 or 10W60 in a turbo engine. My personal level of appreciation, though it's subjective and probably not relevant at all, is when pressure at idle with the engine fully hot does not show below 3 on the dash gauge. Of course that takes for granted that the gauge still shows what it should after 25+ years of operation, as I have seen some needing a recalibration after all those years.

My Turbo had Mobil Super 10w-40 in it when I bought the car and it seemed to burn a noticable amount. I have since switched to Total Quartz 10w-50 - now I have better oil pressure and have not had to top up yet.

Im using Royal Purple 10w40 with no probs, now doing more track work and less road stuff so may step up to a 10w50 but my oil supplier is adamant that I don't need to go any thicker due to the properties of Royal Purple, in particular its film strength.

I like Millers - I'd have thought the Mobil 1 10w60 would be fine also. FWIW I use cheap Petronas 10w40 in the S2 (and Boxster) and it's just fine - wouldn't use it in a track turbo though.

I'm using Total Quartz Racing 10/50. Well respected brand and can be sourced at good prices on e-bay. Good for fast road and occasional track. I would recommend a 10/50 for any hard driven turbo or 10/60 for a really hard driven one though I found the 10/60 a little thick on start-up in the frozen winter confines of Scotland! Stuart

Thanks All, Actually Stuart, based on Hallsy's comment above I did a bit of a search on the quartz and found a post of yours possibly on Tipec mentioning you were happy with it too - so have ordered 10 litres of the 10W50. Anyone reccomend a service kit? plugs, air filter oil filter, fuel filter, sump washer? I see Frazer part do them but not too sure about oem air filter and fuel filter. Is OPC a good option? Cheers Craig

An oe filter will be ok if it's a Mahle one, as this is same as opc will supply, but lacking a porsche badge. It may have slight differences but more than likely it's the same. I have used Berlyn for service parts in the past, always had good prices.

For the parts either OPC, FrazerPart or Berlyn will be fine. In my Turbo I used Mobil 1 10W60. In the height of the summer with hard driving the pressure did not really drop off. It was what I was recommended to run the Turbo on. Personally I would go no lower than a 50 weight in a Turbo ; they do seem to produce some heat, more than the NAs it seems!
