Oil Grade

I've got my 2001 Boxster S booked in for a service this week and have been advised by a friend that I supply my own oil. I am aware that Porsche recommends Mobil 1, but am unsure as to the grade I require. Does anyone know the correct grade ??

In the US Porsche Cars North America comes out with a list of approved oils about twice a year for oil we can buy in our market.

Last year PCNA came out with an 8 page world wide list. No sure why they did this for the US since very few of the oils on the list are available in the US.

Hope my link to the pdf works. Jeff

As far as I'm aware you can use any Porsche Approved 0w-40 or 5w-40.

There are many to choose from but the ester based oils are best.

Porsche GB have a deal with Mobil and this means that the Dealer will automatically supply M1 0w-40 as standard. It doesn't make it the best oil though. Just the best deal for the Dealer.

I found a newer world wide list dated July 9, 2004. If someone want the 2003 list then copy it as I will be deleting it soon.

Mobil does have a deal with Porsche and other car companies. I think it used to be Shell. I'm sure Mobil pays a lot of money to have their sticker placed on your car. In the US you even get a Mobil brochure with a new car.

Mobil has a huge market share for synthetic oil, at least in the US. As oilman said, Mobil may not be the best. Jeff

2004 oil list

One of the best ones I can see on that list is the ester based Motul 8100 range.

Available in Europe and reasonably priced. The tech data along with the Castrol, Mobil and Fuchs oils can be found on my website and is in downloadable PDF format for those interested in the techie stuff.

Can anybody tell me if there would be any bad effects of putting a 10W40 grade synthetic in my Boxster as I think that is what was put in at the last service.

Cary,

The honest answer is no.

This grade is also listed but for a different temperature range and it's within the UK range.

The only difference is cold start viscosity 10w as opposed to 5w. The 5w will flow more easily when cold which is better for winter use although UK temps are not exactly extreme.

They are both sae 40's when the engine's hot so no difference there.

Hope this helps

When I was in France I bought Mobil 1 Super Syn 5 litres plus a free litre for £4 per litre. It is almost £9.00 at Halfords and over £12 from a Porsche dealer. Why??
It cost me £32 for the dealer to pour my oil in my car instead of £100 to supply the same thing. Why??

Because they want to make as much money as possible from you.

Stealers charge a fortune for oil and a change, and rely on the fact not many do their home work into what it actually costs and if the dealer is really putting in oil of any quality.

You have to ask at Lovetts as unless you bring your own you get Castrol.
