Oil in Heat exchanger

Hi

I seem to have oil in the left hand side heat exchanger, which is burning off when driving and smoke entering the cockpit. Does anyone know how the oil could have got in the heat exchanger?

Also read plenty posts mentioning top end rebuilds. Why would a car require this?

Top ends are often needed as the head studs snap. Magazine articles always say top end needed at 100k but like many other things magazines say is largely drivel. As with most things each case should taken on it's own merits.
 
Rooksy I cannot see how you are getting oil into the heat exchanges they are a closed system, are you getting oil dripping onto the out side then the fumes coming through the flapper valves or is the car burning oil at start up!
you could come to Witton castle on the 17th and have a word with a few people that have 3.2's

You do get some air flow even when everything is off. Could be smoke getting in, although I think it would have to bad to get dragged in through the flappers when everything us off. Quite likely that they have a hole in them.
 
Hi

I think the car is starting to burn oil, smokey on start up and had to top the oil up more than I used to. There is also oil on the outside of the heat exchangers so you suggestions about the smoke getting sucked in through the flapper valves makes sense.

Think it's time for some serious TLC! Will try and get down to Witton Castle any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rooksy

To get oil on the outside of the heat exchangers you have a leak get the under side of the engine steam cleaned then look for the leak,
Leaks can come from cam cover gaskets, Cam housing to cylinder heads, the 4 drain back tubes, Cylinder barrels to crank cases, Engine oil cooler,

If you are burning oil smoke coming out of tail pipe, could be worn piston ring or more likely valve guides + seals, This will mean a top end rebuild,
Cost about £3000.- £4000, at a specialist.

I rebuilt my top end last year at a cost of£3000 the biggest expense being a complete stainless exhaust.
The problem was worn valve guides no6 was the worst at 4mm slop.

ps £3_4000 at a Porsche centre is very cheap.My milage 98000 is that scary or what?
 
Hi 911 targa, did you carry out the work yourself? Are there tests to carryout to pin point the problems?

I'm coming up to 114k so it's conceivable it needs doing

I have this problem with my 1975 Targa 911S, also on the LH side. My local engine specialist is looking at the problem and currently scratching his head but is leaning towards an oil leak and a hole in the heat exchanger. Will keep you posted as to the outcome.

Yes ,quite difficult but satisfying.The reason it was done was a lot of smoke and cylinders dropping out and 200mls to a pint of oil.
