oil in water

New member

I have a 1985 944 which has recently began to seep oil into the cooling water. After prolonged use the oil level can be seen to reduce. There is no water seeping into the oil. From what I've read, I believe this could be due to one of two problems. The first being the head-gasket or, the second, a faulty oil cooler/leaking seals.

I'd be grateful if any of you guys (or gals) have any experience of this the past and any tips on pinpointing the most likely cause.

Many thanks

Ieuan.

Mine was the oil cooler seals. It is claimed elsewhere (maybe here too) that persisting driving with the seals leaking will eventually result in water getting into the oil aswell. This can wipe out your motor in ways which others may be able to explain better than me.

Yes usually the cooler seals on lux's
Water in the oil is bad because it is a very poor lubricant so expect accelerated engine wear. IIRC originally the cars were supplied with an orange gasket, this was superseeded by a green one, which is more reliable (though if its still on the original its not done too bad [;)].

I have seen this problem a lot on Golfs and Corrados, usually down to the oil cooler, but I am new to this 944 ownership so could be something else.

Try the oil cooler rubber seals. The early red seals are a known problem, newer type is green. You can get new oil seals, and good advise, from www.porscheshop.co.uk
DO NOT USE THE CAR UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS SORTED as water and alluninium cylinder bores do not mix.

I had this on my 944s. Get a cylinder compression test done, it sounds like the head gasket could be on its way out.
"Trying" the oil cooler seals is not for the faint hearted, as they are an absolute nightmare to do, and if they aint broke they do not need fixing before you eliminate the head gasket from the equation.

Thanks guys.

I spoke with OPC who say that as long as I keep the oil topped up I should get to them fine (1.5hrs drive) and that they suspect, as suggested here and elsewhere that the oil cooler is the problem. They will confirm for me what the problem is (FOC). Theoretically if its the seals the oil pressure (which is good) will keep the water out of the oil, hence oil in water, not water in the oil...

If it is oil cooler seals I will do them all. Head gasket...ooops not done that before, and my annual "repair and restore" budget was hard-hit by belts, water pump etc @ £1100+ recently.

Thanks Geoff for the pointer about not driving her, hmmm the only other way is a transporter which is certainly cheaper than a ruined engine.
