Oil leak cured with hammer !

I had an irritating oil leak from the filler tube which I couldn't get to grips with. Just a small amount of oil each fast drive --- but enough to justify a mini mop up in the environs !

When I showed it to Paul he noticed that the edge of the thread had a very slight dent which was possibly evading the seal in the filler cap --- this has proven to be an accurate diagnosis.

Taking the round edge of a hammer and placing this inside the dented edge, I rested my hand on the inner wing area to create a pivot point, and gently levered the dent out with gentle pressure on the end of the hammer handle.

This proved to be very controllable, the metal was quite soft and returned to it's original shape without drama.

Result, no more leaks (so far !)

And I don't know why, but my oil level guage seems to be working a little better ...

Has this only happened to me ?

My mechanical education consisted of:

If you cannot fix it with a hammer, it is an electrical problem.[:D]

Seems to be some truth in that

If it moves but shouldn't - duct tape
If it doesn't move but should - WD40

Well the fix stood up to a 500 Km day inclding Croft so, the hammer works !

Sorry to say that my tool kit included a rollof Duct Tape --- which thank goodness I had no need for.

But, did have a moment with a bag I'd put in the boot. It moved and pulled out the Brake Servo pump --- mid lap beep beep five times, brake warning light, everything worked, pedal normal --- but had to come in anyway.
No leaks, fluid level OK, pedal Ok, so went back out onto the pit lane, pedal hard -- almost no brakes -- thank goodness for the red flag that gave me time to check it out !!!

Very happy to help. [:D]

Begs the question - how did the damage occur in the first place? Could only happen when the filler cap was off. The filler is made from soft, thin metal and all servicing agents should take extra care - they wouldn't do it on purpose would they? [;)]

Starting to bond with these cars now! [8D]
