Oil leak from Turbo Charger

My car went in for its first MOT last week and the inspector drew my attention to the presence of oil on the cold side of one of the turbochargers. Its not possible to see where the oil is coming from and I haven't yet got it into an OPC for investigation. I have only found one reference online to leaks from the turbocharger on this type of engine and that was on a 991.2.

Anyone heard of or had any similar issue?

Need to check if it's coming from the turbo itself or some other component or spillage above it.
If so then it is either leakage from the oil feed or defective bearing within the turbo - usually diagnosed by a smoky exhaust.
Both would be covered under extended warranty,

Regards,

Clive

Mike, I had a 991.2 that needed it’s Turbos and associated oils feed pipes, seals, etc replaced (it might have been my post you saw). I believe that it was a "known” problem with those 3.0 Turbo engines, but would have anticipated the 992.1 would have been been modified to overcome this (as part of the turbo change of direction, etc). I have not seen any similar 992 issues (on Rennlist, etc) so hopefully yours is is something minor.

With crossed fingers,
Tim

Hi Tim - would you be able to point me toward your post; I don't seem to be able to find it.

Thanks Tim. I don't normally peruse Pistonheads but there seems to be a lot of commentary about 991.2s with turbo related issues. Trying to get mine booked in right now. I'm off to the Beaulieu weekend soon so will leave it until after that as there is no evidence of blue smoke so I am assuming that either the leak is external to the turbo (oil feed perhaps) or possibly from elsewhere; either way its not a major leak so little danger of anything letting go in the space of a few weeks. It was serviced by OPC 7 months ago (since which I have done 700 miles!); I hope they saw no evidence of this and simply ignored it.

Yes - it doesn't look like the same type of problem. The recency of the service is a good thing too. My fingers are crossed for you.

[attachment=2022-08-09-1(XV).png] UPDATE: OPC has identified fault as being the intake pipe on the turbocharger.

Coincidentally, I also found a post on another forum relating to the same issue (Oil Leak at Bank 2 Turbo Inlet Pipe - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums) and the poster included a screen shot of the Technical Information Bulletin issued in Jan 2021 which led me to find the full TSB which can be found here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/...1/MC-10186370-0001.pdf

Looking at the parts that are replaced under the TSB, the issue is to do with the air intake and not the oil feed; the parts involved (on the picture) are 17 (Air-duct), 18 (O-ring) an 19 (Clamp). Not sure how/why this results in a leak of oil. Clearly, for a TSB to exist specifically relating to the RH turbocharger, this must be a recognised issue.
