Oil Leak/RMS Replacement

Guest

Following a 72,000 mile service at my local OPC, a small oil leak was reported at the rear of the car. I was advised that the leak was minor and it was suggested that they check it during my next service.

I have been following the RMS threads with interest but wondered whether I am best to leave the leak for the time being? If I wanted to replace the seal I have been quoted £544 for the privilege but wondered how best to reduce my chances of having further problems and the questions to ask at the OPC to ensure that they are up to speed with the issues and latest fitting guidance?

You might just want to live with it if you have to pay. Maybe when it is time for a clutch replacement.

Porsche has changed the seal design 3 times, and the 3rd version just came out. Would not be suprised to see a 4th version in the future since it is the same seal used in the 987. The tool to install the seal has also changed several times over the years, and there was another recent change to the tool. So the latest information today may change tomorrow. Plus if your crank in not centered then there is a risk that a replacement seal will also leak.

The leak can also be from the intermediate shaft seal or bolts, or the rear crankshaft bolts, and/or in addition to the seal. There is no way to tell without removing the transmission as oil leaking from any of these three sources with show up in the same place. Jeff
