Oil Leak

TRW40

New member
My car is leaving a drop or two of oil on the floor when parked up. I have traced the location to the gap between the rear and front undertrays, roughly in the centre. I am not mechanically minded and it is of course difficult to see without a ramp, but it would appear to be coming from the area where the engine meets the transmission housing (that may be a stupid observation and so I stand to be corrected). I am not aware of any smoking. Any thoughts?

oil filter is most likely leaking.....

one if located in front of the offside wheel and the other and most likely suspect if right on the base of the engine almost half way down........

using Mobil 1? is so then it's time to change as the thin 0w40 is prone to leaking through those USA made oil filters

It sounds like an RMS leak, if it is, and its not a big leak just leave it until you are ready to have the clutch done. Also, its always worth having an expert take a look just to be sure.

I had exactly the same problem with mine last year[] it was the engine oil filter, as described by sundeep, but had nothing to do with the oil, as such. The filter had actually corroded, thereby allowing the oil to run down itself, onto the trays and onto my garage floor. New filter fitted and problem solved[;)]

It appears to be a common problem when the filters are changed every two years as opposed to one, the moral being.....

Hope this helps[;)]

which is why I change both filters at every oil change every 6000 miles !

Many thanks for your comments. I shall take it to my local specialist and hope they confirm it is the oil filter and not the RMS. Will update you!

Also worth checking is the oil pressure sender/switch,it is located at the top rear of the engine, down behind the airbox.
It sprays/drips down round the engine and ends up dripping from the described spot it a £50 Diy fix that was the source of my leak a couple of months ago.Jz Machtech said this was quite common as well.....along with the other sugestions above.
Cheers Dan.

Could also be a weep from one of the cam cover gaskets. I had similar symptoms and of course its very difficult without fully lifting the car to inspect underneath to find where its coming from. Oil has a habit of running along various components and dropping from the underside at a different place.

Check the small oil filter is tight. Mine did this last year and the filter had slackened off somehow. Tightened it and no more drips.
