Oil leak

My 98 C2 has the RMS leak. My question relates to the oil level - basically there is too much oil, above maximum on the dash indicator and also the dipstick although I realise neither is an exact science! Could this have caused/contributed to the leak? Should I let some of the oil out to reduce the level, or doesn't it really matter? The engine does not burn any oil and it runs superbly - good oil pressure etc.
