oil leak

Went for a drive to-day and now have an oil leak which drips onto the exhaust, noticable as it smokes from the rear wheel arch after being driven hard, not too much but I assume its the rear crankshaft seal dripping.
Any suggestions welcomed

 
Its unlikley to be the rear crank seal as it would drip in the centre possably cam cover gaskets or oil presure switch on the top of the engine and the oil runing down. Berny.
 
Berny ypu beat me to it, have to agree not heard of crank seal being an issue, more like cover seals ( can upgrade to turbo covers to prevent warping) or some other leak.
 
Also worth checking the breather pipes towards the back of the engine, these can crack and drip down the back of the engine and burn off onthe crossover pipe.
 
Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies. The leak is certainly from the back of the engine...hard to see but dripping onto the crossover pipe and burning off. Some oil also on the rh heat exchanger. Valve/Rocker covers look OK but again hard to see however looks unlikley it would get onto the crossover pipe if leaking from there. Am I right in assuming that its an engine out job to sort it? regards
 
Had something similar on my 84 Targa, leak was from one of the pipes which was split / not seated correctly. Originally thought it was the valve covers, but even after rummaging around under the car, couldn't really identify where the oil was coming from. All fixed by the garage during main annual service though. Good luck getting it sorted.
 
Hi check the oil presure switch! on the top at the back of the engine you can change it without to much truble but it may help if you remove the two engine mounting bolts and lower the engine a little on a jack. Berny.
 
I fixed a couple of breather hoses and tightened the clips without an engine drop, I had to remove the airbox and throttle body I think. It was a while ago. If I needed to do it again I'd do a partial engine drop, i.e. lower the back half of the engine down on a trolley jack. Takes about 15-30 minutes including getting your tools out. You can then access everything you need to do to replace/check the breather pipes/tower and pressure switch. Main problem with mine when I first had was very similar to yours, usually only noticeable when crawling in traffic or stationary. Oil being burnt off would smoke or haze out from under the arches. Main cause on mine was a tapped up bodge from the previous owner and a loose clip. I replaced the tape with a better taped up bodge and tightened the clip, never smoked since and that was 3 years ago.
 
Hi Guys, just to let you know...all fixed, and you were right...oil pressure switch. I would not have believed that could cause such a leak, but apparently the guys at Northway tell me its common and the oil is under a lot of pressure. Anyway, thanks for the help and advice. While I was there, saw a nice 3.2 Ray has just bought in White F reg, so if anyone is looking for one , check the Northway website over the next few weeks
