oil leaks Gear or Engine ??

These european trips seem good at the time !!!
Intermitent starting
Oil level indicator faulty

NOW just spotted 3 Spots of oil on the garage floor, NEVER b4 has my 911 ever tarnished the garage floor wots happening ??

3 spots app 8" (200mm) apart straight down the middle of the car from the rear bumper the 1st one starts about 24" in and moves forward.

Could it be gearbox oil it seems too far forward to be the engine ( & its under the gear box) or engine oil running down and dripping from the lowest point.
it seems V. black oil compared to the recently serviced engine oil on the dip stick

Wot do u put it down too. Long hot days running at high temps
Used no more engine oil than use. app a little under a litre every 1000 miles

Could be from many different sources - tracing leaks on 911s can be very difficult (I know!).

Best bet is to degrease/clean engine and transmission, run engine to get it hot and watch to see where it comes from. Are the heat exchangers getting burn't oil marks? Check the oil cooler at the back of the engine + the usual places (oil return tubes, cylinder head joints etc ...). Is the top front (fan end) of the engine clean? - the oil feed pipes running across each cam chain cover and the pipes feeding the cam chain tensioners can leak and make a real mess everywhere .......... ???
 
You can normaly tell the differnce engine to gear box oil by the smell! if you think its engine oil check the oil pressure switch on the top of the engine at the back you will have to remove air cleaner. one of the easey things to check as has been said could be from lots of places, good luck Regards Berny
 
I've had some corking leaks over the years from 3.2 carrera, 964 and early 2.7. Barrels, heads, valve carriers and camcovers - all leak. Just add various pipes, tanks and hoses and you have a recipe for permanent oily trouble. Basically whoever had the brilliant idea of bolting an engine together, laying it flat and then filling it with oil ensured full time employment for an army of engine specialists for years to come.

The 3.2 leaked copiously from the joint between the barrels and the crankcase. This dripped off the bottom of the crank case in the way you have described, and was indicative of pulled head stud(s). Any cure would have involved a full stripdown and rebuild. I just sold it on, I'm afraid.

The 964 leaked from the joint between the heads and the valve carrier. That was good for several drips a night on the in-laws perfect driveway.

The 2.7 just leaked from everywhere.

To check the gearbox oil removing one of the rear wheels helps to see the plug. I forget which side the plug is in though. You will need a male hex tool, it is quite large, I have a set with lots of sizes so I am not sure of the size.
Trying to do it without removing the rear wheel is asking for you to round it off...
