Had my cam covers done back in 2005/06 and i remember it being very stresful back then as a total novice. Last year I noticed oil smoke again and has now got a lot worse from the the left rear arch.Its one of the first jobs for me to do this spring. Funny thing is now I've lived with the car for 10 years[], I find the problem more embarrassing than stressful now. A good example being in the 911 parade at classics at the castle.[&o] Id make sure all that oil has been cleaned off those cars get damn hot. []

When my 993 gets hot - say sitting in traffic for 5/10 minutes - I get gentle wafts of oil smoke from both the rear wheel arches. After a while the oil is burnt off and it stops.
I have put on a ramp and removed the engine cover and whilst it is a little oily it is in no way excessive. The top of the heat exchangers feel slightly oily but in the main are clean.
At a cost of £600 I had my OPC replace both the lower camshaft covers (I intended to do this myself but could only loosen half the Allen bolts and was afraid to break/strip the remainder).
This did not cure the problem - in hindsight I should have presented it to them as "stop the leak" but as I was convinced it was the cam covers I simply asked them to change them.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the cause and the solution.
I want to cure this issue before the Goodwood/Silverstone queuing to get in starts as I find it very stressful waiting for the smoke to start - queuing for the Revival last September caused the owner of the car behind some stress as well !!

I'm sure I had a split hose from the brake fluid or PAS fluid reservoir that was leaking onto the hot exhaust on on one of my previous 993's. That created loads of smoke from the drivers side rear wheel arch.

You need to trace where the oil is coming from for us to help. If your cam covers are still wet then you need to do the top ones. There's also an oil pipe that may have rusted through a bit further forward

Thanks for all your help. I am going to clean the engine and then trace the leak properly and go from there. Will post again when I have done this.

I had the same problem with my 993, and it was not the cam covers also. Some O-rings at the engine (crank case) were leaking (sorry for the poor description, I didn´t do it myself), because they were old, no longer flexible and probably no longer in one piece. Having cleaned the engine and traced the leak(s), you might well come to the same conclusion. Replacing the O-rings means to tear the engine apart - a big solution for a minor problem. My specialist said that the big solution would cost about 3 Grand. Senseless, because the engine ran good, except the oil leaking out and causing smoke from time to time. He then sealed it from the outside with a Loctite product. That was about two years and 15,000 km ago, no problems ever since, although I use it on German autobahns also. Cost: 30,-- EURO. Well I've cleaned the small amount of oil off and checked the tightness of the rocker covers and cam chain covers and one or two took a small amount of torque to get them up to correct Nm 's. No leaks in Power Steering/Oil Tubes and top cam covers look dry. Did find a bit of oil pooled in the rubber gasket underneath the oil tube where you add oil which could possibly be seeping through. I usually use a funnel when replenishing but may not have been careful enough in the past. I have left covers off and put cardboard under it in the garage to see if any drips appear.
