oil level after service

hi all, had my 48000 mile 2000 S for a couple of years now and its never used any oil and oil level on on dash and dip has always been full, it was in for a major service at OPC last week when i left house in morning it showed full drove the 25 mile to garage dropped it off, i cant remember looking at indicator when i left the opc but drove the 25 mile dual carriage way so steady 70/80mph home and put it back in garage which is flat land level and when the car sits there it always shows oil level perfect.
Went to move it yesterday and oil level shows half on dash bit puzzled so checked the dip stick and it matched the dash no sign of oil leak both rms and ims seals were done 6000miles ago and the ios was done just after wee bit o blue smoke on start up which is normal after being left sitting for a week, so i undone filler cap while running to check vac and car almost stalled and had a very uneven idle.

Just wondering if its just as simple as the tech hasn't topped up after running to fill the oil filter, or something more serious.
 
Hi Tex,

If it's a dry sump system you'd expect some of the oil to remain in the engine pan after you stop the engine because it won't be scavenged back to the external tank which is where the level is being measured. I don't know if that would make a difference. Why not note the level and go for another 25 mile drive and see if it goes down again? (And if you're burning that much oil, look out for the blue cloud behind you!)
 
I would be driving 25 miles straight back to OPC. And asking them for an explanation.

They take 9.3litres of oil, so that's over 4 litres of oil you've been short changed by.

I'm 180 miles south of car at the moment and it was only just before i left house that i noticed so didnt get time to drive it, but as soon as i get back up I'm going for a spin just to see as i topped it up took 1/4 of a litter to get to Max mark
 
well after a 25 mile journey oil was still half way down dip stick so topped up and after checking when I got home oil level fine, so must have just been a little oops by the tech. all sorted now tho and cant be bothered stirring up bother at OP
 

It does sound as though the tech made a mistake Tex. Probably he topped-up after draining the oil but didn't re-check after running the engine, the low oil level being accounted for by the oil filter and galleries. Poor service really from a PC, considering what they're charging these days; a letter to the Service Manager might be useful if only to make him/her aware of the event.

At least you have the benefit of having a dipstick and gauge to check the level. Owing to cost-cutting measures, my 987 only has a gauge, but at least it's only possible to check the level when the engine is running and warmed-up, so should avoid the problem you mention; provided, of course, that the gauge is working correctly and the tech checks it out after refilling.

Isn't the difference between the min and max is only a litre, just as you would find on a dipstick? I.e. The dash display isn't showing the whole 9 litres.
 
cheers jeff, what no dip stick on the 987 I never knew that I like having a manual way of checking the levels.

ye the dash and the dipstick are the same and would say you were right about a litre as 2 blocks on dash was about 1/4ltr
