Oil level display (again)

stomper

Hi, appreciating that this tends to be one of the more common topics, bear with me.

Over the past 18 months, I think mine's behaved reasonably, I put oil in, it goes up, then slowly over time it goes down ( usually around the 5/6 month point ) and I put more oil in. The car is parked in the same place all the time.

The issue is that it's remained at 3/4 level for the last 3 months, it hasn't moved, which is a change in behavior and I'm getting suspicious, it's almost like I'm willing it to go down when I turn the key.

Is there any other way of checking? Draining and refilling seems like over reacting but I'd appreciate anyones thoughts on this.

Thanks

Are we to assume that you do the same mileage each month, without fail, and the same type of driving at that? What consumption are you looking at per 1000 miles?

I have previously posted my surprise at the seemingly inconsistent oil consumption on my C2. I did approx 20000 miles in the first two years (the car was 13 months old when I got it) and the level did not go down once. OPC then find an oil leak (it must have been a small one) and it takes them two goes to repair it. Now "post repair" I find that with the same style of driving I am having to top it up every 1500 miles or so.

Thanks for the replies.

The driving pattern, within reason, doesn't vary much, it's not exactly the same and the mileage has dropped off in the last 2 weeks but prior to that it was consistent, I've topped it up 3 times in the last 9K with a 1L bottle which gives you some idea of the consumption and the level's not moved at all in the last 3 months.

There's this nagging doubt in my mind that the sensor's not reporting the correct level and I'm happily motoring around unaware of how much oil is left, that being said, the oil pressure gauge is happily pegged at 5 for anything above 2K revs.

Thanks Porrohman for the insight, I think I will bring this up with my local OPC.

If you mean 1L in 9k that is excellent - even 1L every 3k is well within limits, so I reckon you've little to worry about!

Thanks for the comments, my issue is that the gauge is saying I'm not consuming any oil which I tend not to believe, given like you, it's historically used around 1L every 3K miles.

Thanks anyway.
