Oil Level Gauge Repair

My oil level gauge has been inoperative for some time. I appreciate it is never very accurate but I like to have everything working on the car. I remember reading that the cause is often the sender unit on the oil
tank.

I have accessed the oil tank by removing the right hand rear wheel arch liner and found something the size of a 2p coin surrounded by six small bolts on the side of the tank. I am assuming that this is the sender unit. Can anybody confirm this? Also, I tried to follow the pigtail lead up into the wheel arch but could not find where it was attached. Any advice would be appreciated. Do I need to drain the oil before changing it? Finally, does anybody have any idea how much it costs? If it is more than "pocket money" in price I may go back to the supplying dealer of the car.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. The level only just lifted off the bottom of the gauge. You have found the sender Unit under the o/s wheel arch. You can check if it is the Sender Unit by unplugging it. In the Engine compartment RH side nearest the Rear lights/Oil filler you will find a Connection Box (Black) in there you will find varoius wires. From memory it was a Yellow Connector near the bottom, (only two wires in it) Have the ignition on and unplug it, you should then see the oil level rise straight to the top. I had mine changed when it had it's 12K Service as they were changing the oil & its a pain to get the cable through with the Oil pipes. (High level in the centre under the Wheel Arch. it then has to be feed through the engine bay to that Connection box. The price of mine was £ 84.50 + VAT not 100 % sure if that was the fitted price. Don't forget the new Seal if you change it yourself. Mine was done at Reading OPC. Hope that helps

I don't know if you have considered this, but it is my belief that the oil level guage only registeres after the engine is fully warmed up, and the car is staitionary on level ground
