Oil level not reading after oil change

Decided to change the oil myself on my 2014 991 Carrera S Cabrio having just bought it with 7k miles and prefer to change the oil at 12m intervals. Porsche wanted £300 ...... Bought oil and parts for about£100.

Bought the genuine parts did the change and filled with 7.4l of 0W40 Mobil 1. Handbook says 7.5 l approx as fill capacity after change. Decided its easy to add more to correct level than remove it.

Went to check the oil level on the electronic gauge but it says oil level not available ...... Can anyone explain this and what I need to do to get the oil level readout functioning?

oil pressure is fine and level must be about right having measured the fill volume.

Just a thought but doesn't the display show the oil level only after the car has been driven a few miles once the rear hatch has been opened?

You will need to drive the car and get the engine warm before you will be able to get a reading.

You have to open the door to let the clutch out, too (:ROFLMAO:[8|] just joking).

OK seems there are lots of anecdotal tales of how one should get the reading to function .

I drove my car about 0.5 miles last night after changing the oil and still had the not available message when I tried to get a reading.
Put the car in the garage last night checked it this morning with ignition on but not running , and the level read out works fine.

Hi
All you have to do to check oil level is switch on ignition do not start car then select vehicle and then oil measurement . Make sure car in on level ground. I do this every time after filling with fuel.

The issue here is not how to access the correct screen in the menu but how to get the oil level readout when the message reads oil level not available at this time.

1. Engine cold, car not started, engine bay hatch not opened - Switch on ignition, select oil level measurement and it will display the level.
As soon as you either open the engine bay hatch or start the car you will get the message that Oil level measurement is not available at this point you need to drive the car until the oil temperature has got up to at least 70C then switch off and leave for a few minutes then switch on and you will be able to get the Oil Measurement Display. If after this you then open the engine bay hatch to top up the oil, you will have to wait again for a few minutes (provided the engine is warm) before you can get the Oil level Display to show again.

2. If you don't start the car and open the engine bay cover after step 1 you will have to wait a lot longer before the reading becomes available hence why it's best to do all this when the engine oil is up to operating temperature (90C - 110C) because the wait intervals after opening the hatch are much shorter.

3. I have also found it's possible to get a reading whilst the car is on the move, not sure that makes a lot of sense given the oil is in circulation so it's presumably measuring what is left in the reservoir as it's a Dry Sump System.

All the above from my experience of 2.5 years ownership, first a Carrera 3.4 and now my GTS.
Hope that helps
Adrian
