Oil level reminder

Just to remind all that the oil level can only be measured on the dash with the car warm and horizontal. PC Bristol topped mine up with 2 litres and said that the count down needs to be from 5 min and anything less will not produce the correct reading.
Latterly I had only done it from cold - oops!

Interesting, that is not what my owners manual states. It recommends checking before embarking on a journey and points out that the wait required is only 5 seconds. The only reference made to 5 minutes is that you have to wait for the complete countdown when you happen to be checking with engine at operating temperature to achieve an acurate reading in that instance. Besides the level is also checked when you refuel anyway and most garage forecourts are on level ground.

Mine counts down from the max of 10 seconds to 5 seconds and won't do the check if the car is cold ... [&:]

To get 2 litres in the car it must have been really low Andy ?? each mark on the dipstick/meter is supposed to be 0.25ltr from my understanding

My manual too and that's what I was told on collection and have been doing. From what I know of the system, as long as you get a good reading when cold, should be fine. A hot reading after a reasonable period of standing shouldn't be much different.

I check mine hot and cold and rarely any difference between the two readings, just occasionally I get a higher reading hot but never more than 1 bar difference - BTW each bar is 0.4 litre.

Even when cold it was only down 2 spaces but is now up to the line. Perhaps not 2 litres then!

I was warned of risk of damage due to overfilling and advised only to add oil when level was down two bars. So I don't think you need have any concern that you have been running with oil level too low.

Same advice I was given [:)]

I've only had my c4s a couple of months so haven't quite figured out why it checks the oil sometimes and not others. Bit annoying as the engine won't start until its finished... I've never had to wait five minutes though..

Won't start until it's finished? Mine's not like that, I only check every so often.

I've admitted on this forum before to being a bit OC re monitoring fuel and oil consumption. I check the oil level before leaving the garage, i.e. when cold and before starting. I also check after a fuel stop - if there is no one waiting for the pump. I check again after returning the car to the garage and about ten minutes after stopping the engine.

Each bar represents 0.4 litre so at the instant when the reading changes from zero to one bar down it should only take 0.2 bar to top up - on the assumption that the gauge rounds to the nearest bar. To get an accurate measure of oil consumption rate I make a note of the mileage when the gauge changes from zero to one bar down and again when it moves from one to two bars down. The oil consumption between these two readings is 0.4 litre so it is then possible to calculate the miles/litre.

For the first 2000 miles in my C2S consumption was low, I then had the oil changed and consumption appeared to increase significantly but things have settled down again and for the last 1700 miles I've been waiting for the gauge to drop to two bars, so I am doing better than 4000 miles/litre. According to Porsche anything better than 1000km/litre is within spec.

Alan - interesting stats on the oil usage rates which look similar to an article I read ages ago on the V10 in the M5.

Further discusions revealed just 1litre was used and not 2 as first advised - which may be related to RMS ( see above!)
