oil loss boxster

can anyone help or indicate if they have had a similar problem - My 2.7 boxster (51 plate with 31000 miles full service history) suddenly lost power and then stopped - after it stopped it dropped all its oil - upon scrutiny the seems to have come from the flange where the flying wheel meets the clutch hosing as if the shaft seal has blown - has anybody experienced this????

I'm surprised nobody has offered any knowledge on this one, given the regular discussion over RMS and a few other faults.
A colleague of mine had a similar experience with his '03 3.2S after 1yr & 12k miles; he heard a metallic rattle - once when out on the road & once again as he was putting the car away for the day. He came out to the garage in the morning and nearly slipped over on the oil slick which had spread all over the floor. Turned out to be a broken main shaft(??) if I have described it correctly. OPC replaced the engine for him after a bit of persuasion.

I remember one of the other Boxster (female I think) owners has reported something similar to your problem too - a search might turn something up.

I can only hope this is not your problem & wish you luck. Let us know the outcome.

Your RMS would have to be missing to drop all the oil! [&:]

It's pointless speculating but I think the engine is knackered.

I concurr...
Sounds more like secondary-shaft failure (of which I am becoming aware there are a few of...[])

thnanks to all who posted replies - I think the same - as you may well understand am gutted - its going into hartech in the new year - thanks again to all

My bet is the intermediate shaft. This shaft drives the cams via chains. The end of the shaft at the flywheel side is threaded with a bolt just below the flywheel. When the shaft fails the bolt breaks off with the end of the shaft and oil comes pouring out.

Good luck with your replacement engine.
