OIL LOW

Hi,

Had my 997 Carrera S 2005 for 5 weeks. . When i got it from the dealer the oil was at the highest point of the marker.

I have done 1800 miles.

Yesterday i did a 6 hour drive on the motorway non stop one way.

The oil checker on teh computer system shows it to be lower than the marker and its flashing too.

Is this usual for a porsche to already want me to add more oil to it?

It is unusal and the long drive certainly shouldn't of used an oil to that extent.
I've never seen it flash! [&:]
But be aware, ground that is not level will give alternative readings.

As Gary says the reading is very sensitive to anything varying from horizontal in both x and y planes. Also lots of short runs, when the oil never comes up to temp (90C+), can lead to a build up of water in the oil and this masks the true level of the oil. A subsequent prolonged run, when the oil is at 100C, drives off this moisture and gives a seemingly dramatic drop in level. My suggestion is you monitor the level over a series of long drives. If you've not already done so it's also worth familiarising youself with the section on oil level in the handbook. BTW Porsche do not consider oil consumption of less than 1litre/1000km as excessive[:'(].

one other thing the oil pressure gauge ie the dial on the far right above the wheel goes straight to the highest number which is 5. I have only been driving it for 10 minutes at a time today, but it stays on 5.

Is that therefore proof that the oil is low and needs topping up?

I also wonder whether oil usage is variable. For the first 2 years of running my C2 total miles 20000 the gauge did not move off the top bar. I then had 2 supposed oil leaks repaired (where the oil was coming from I do not know as the gauge never went down) and post repair I now have to top it up quite regularly!

I agree that it has to be checked on totally even ground. I normally check mine when I put the car in the garage an hour or so after I have got home.
