Oil Measurement

Hi, Im still learning about my 997 Carrera 4S and Ive noticed that when I first start the car the Oil Measurement count down is typically 6 seconds and the cars start perfectly. Then, if I make a few short stops after the car is warm, i.e. getting fuel, and prepare to start the car again, the Oil Measurement has shown, 59 minutes, 6 minutes or some other amount. Ive not sat waiting for that long count down so Ive started the car and moved on.

Any suggestions.

Thank you

I don't think you will be able to accurately assess oil level without either a longish journey or leaving the car running for a while after you return from your short stops. This is because oil takes much longer to reach normal running temperature than coolant. So, although you assume the car is warm, the engine lubricant is still too cool and cannot be measured. Hence the length of time being shown.

Hi
Firstly, the oil level can only be assessed after the car has sat for some time - usually at least an hour or two - and unlike earlier air-cooled 911s the level is best measured when the car is cold. 6 seconds is the standard time needed from cold.
Secondly, the oil check will always try to get a reading whenever the ignition is turned on, so even when re-starting after a short drive - like you say, to fuel up - the level indicator will attempt to take a reading but the countdown basically says 'I can't get a correct reading for x minutes and seconds' but it's not a warning to not drive the car.

Also - because of the way the lubrication system works, if you have to park on an incline park facing downhill (i.e. nose down) as this ensures the IMS bearing isn't starved of oil when the car is restarted.
