[FONT=arial unicode ms"]I have a 1973 911S and am keen to find out what sort of oil I should be using - I've currently being using mineral oil, as I read that synthetics should not be used on older cars, what are other owners using? - Recommendations please. Also UK supplied cars (as mine is) were originally tuned to run on 2 star petrol, I gather that mine must have been tuned to run on unleaded (I hope!) but should I add any additives (injector or otherwise) periodically to compensate for lost lubrication, etc. Again any recommendations would be appreciated.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

There are some people who believe that synthetics are more likely to leak oil.
Mine uses Millers synthetic and does not leak significantly and I know of others that are happy with Mobil1. It is a personal choice but I see no harm in sticking with synthetics a my car is been run on it for quite a few years now.

The 2.4 engines were designed to run with a lower compression and unleaded fuel and no additives are required.

I am based in Shopshire so I cannot help you with a london dealer except for Autofarm near Oxford who are very good but top money.

As for parts post on here what you need and someone will help.

Also you should join www.ddk-online.com as it heavily focussed on pre 73 Porsches and there are a lot of very helpful guys on there.

Another RHD 2.4S? I would love to hear more about the car.

Your motor will run happily on 2 star unleaded with mods. I put regular 20-50 non-synthetic in my cars.

Andrew - When leaded petrol was being phased out, I religiously used unleaded, with leaded for one fill-up in four, as recommended, for my '73 S. Then one day,I read the Driver's Manual p.106, where it specifically states " low-lead or lead-free gasoline ", so that model should never have needed tuning for lead-free. End of story !

[FONT=arial"]Chris Turner's very good in the Willesden area. Also, for parts use Euro Car Parts (www.eurocarparts.co.uk) for regular service items like brake pads, disks, wipers etc and I've found Type911 (www.type911.co.uk) to be best for 911 specific stuff.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=arial unicode ms"]The car will be hibernating for the winter, (if I can keep my hands off if for that long!) So I plan to start doing basic maintenance (brakes, service etc.) in early spring - My skills stop about there, so the Clutch (believe Engine out) & possibly the flywheel I will look to get done around this time also. (Any ideas on what I should be paying for this sort of work?). Nick - for your interest it's a Tangerine 73 2.4S Targa, huge history file including an full engine overhaul some 8 yrs ago, I would call it's condition average, considering that the interior is scuffy, and that the aforementioned work needs to be carried out. Body is in good nick.The engine leaks a little but sounds great and doesn't smoke. I've only had it 2 months and so far it's been bloody great fun! It's my 3rd Porsche (but my 1st 911) having ventured into "another" marque for the past 2 yrs. But I've found the ole saying has come true.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

As mentioned above, these engines were designed to run on unleaded fuel available in teh USA circa '73.

Oil.. I have used Mobil1 fully synthetic & Silkolene fully synthetic without leaks. I prefer the Mobil1
 
The oil will not leak if you use the correct viscosity.

These older Porsche's are happier on 10w-50 or 15w-50.

Basestocks have nothing to do with it, synthetics are available in the same viscosities as mineral oils!

Thanks for the advise Simon (and others) - I use to use Mobile 1 on my previous more modern Porsche's, from now on I think I'll use it on the 911 also.

The viscosity for an older Porsche is nearer 10w-50 or 15w-50.
