Oil pressure gauge

Hello all,

Looking for some advice on replacement / repair of 993 oil pressure gauge. Mine has started giving erratic (high) readings and the gauge has been diagnosed as the culprit by my local indie - they say it can be repaired but needs to be sent away for up to 6 weeks. This prompts a few questions, which I'm hoping you knowledgable chaps will be able to answer:
- If I drive the car without it, will the oil pressure warning light still work without the gauge fitted ?
- What is the pressure/voltage conversion (thinking I could wire in a multimeter temporarily) ?
- Any ideas where I could get a replacement gauge ? I've scoured the web, unsuccessfully.

So is the indie saying the gauge is getting the right voltage from the sender but somehow moving the needle to the wrong level? Seems an odd fault.

Anyway - I would have thought some of the breakers (like Porsce-Apart) would have these as they can't be in much demand compared with other parts (and I guess are common across quite a few years of models) - but I could be wrong.

MIne seems to read high occassionally - eg over 5
 
I'd suggest you talk to Julian at Reap Automotive. He's been really helpful over the fuel gauge fault on my bro-in-law's 996. He did the gauges for the UK-registered 993's. Advert in PPP every month.
 
Hi Mark,

Yes, the voltage from the sender is correct, but the needle is sticking. Once it continued to read 5 withe the engine not running for several minutes, then dropped back when I turned on the ignition.

I wil try the breakers. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about ebay? There's an oil gauge on the there now at around 90 quid - might be a good place to dig up a replacement?
 
Seen the ones on e-bay, thanks - they don't appear to have all the correct warning lights. But I'll keep checking.

I'll also do a bit of diagnosis using a bench power supply - I suspect a bad solder joint or sticky needle.

What warning lights? I've not noticed a warning light in my oil pressure/fuel level instrument??
 
Here is a picture showing the warning lights. I'm going to check solder joints and apply voltage to see if I can diagnose the problem. Will upload pictures of internals later.

Thanks for the PM - doh! - I can't believe I made that mistake - I was convinced all my lights were inside the rev-counter and the speedo - but it's almost the opposite - the lights are mostly in the minor instruments - just like yours. I was so convinced I had to go out and look in the car - just the same as yours. Sorry for any confusion - in future I'll look at the car and not trust memory.[8|]

Did you find the cause of the problem?

Mark,[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]No problem, and thanks for your interest. I thought I would try to diagnose the problem myself before sending it off for repair. So I have re-soldered all the connections and will test it in the car, (but I don't expect it will help as the solder joints were all good). I also checked the resistance of the two windings in the gauge. From reading up about how these air-core meters work, I'd expect them to be the same resistance, but they aren't (anybody out there know more about this ?). I need to look into this some more, but it's looking like the problem is inside the gauge and I'll have to buy a second hand gauge or send mine off for repair.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Rob[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Rather to my surprise it looks like simply re-soldering the connections has fixed the problem [:D]. I only went for a short test drive and won't be 100% convinced until I've done a 100+ mile journey. I'll keep you posted !

Not surprised - 964s were notorious for this - dodgy solder on dash instruments. I spent years re-soldering mine on my 1989 C4. I thought Porsche has fixed this with the 993 Doh - appears I was wrong.....
 
Just to confirm: oil pressure gauge operation is now completely normal after re-making all the solder joints. Checking this has provided an ideal excuse for some extended testing runs in my local Cotswold lanes over the last few weeks [:D]
