Oil Pressure Gauge

On the way home to-night after about 12 miles and at the last roundabout home the display beeped and came up with (i think) Oil gauge failure.I quickly looked at the Oil pressure and it was 0 then the display cleared and the gague shot up to 5 and for the last 1/Mile home seemed to act as always. Do i need to worry? An help/advice would be appreciated

Somebody else had exactly the same problem recently. It's almost certainly the oil pressure sender (or a dodgy connection to it). I also had a problem and it was just after a major service.

Hi all

this has just happened to me as well. Where is the sensor mounted as I want to check the plug as it would come and go if I hit a bump
In the road so I'm thinking it's hopefully a bad connection.

Thanks Richard

Same thing happened to me this morning, the display stated a sensor failure. The guage hit zero, then after a couple of seconds went back up again. How easy is it to get to the sensor?

Never done it myself but there's a good description in the August edition of Porsche World. (Under q&a section)

Looks fairly easy.

Holy thread resurrection Batman! Welcome Richard!

The sender is on the right hand cylinder head, about 2/3 of the way back, pointing vertically upwards. There is a photo here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=516036

Thanks for repls and the welcome. Hopefully I'll get time to have a look at it this week.

Richard I've actually been reading a few of your posts and have noticed that you've got a book out about the 996 which looks popular so I'll probably have to get myself a copy shortly.

Thanks Richard

Gosh! Another potential book sale. How are you spending all those millions in royalties Richard. If you do get a copy try get one of the rare unsigned ones.A future collector's item.

Mike

Took the spade connectors off the pressure sensor, and then gave everyting a big dose of wd40. The gauge is working smoothly ( if reading a little lower) now.

When hot the gauge sits at 3.5 for low revs, moving upto 4.5 when at higher revs. And then sits at just below 2 at tickover. Does this sound right?

Sounds good to me. You don't say what the 'higher revs' are, but assuming it is about 4000 then that's about right. You might hit 5+ bar at the red line.

I can attest to 5 bar readings at high revs following my trip to Nurburgring. Also had my oil pressure sender replaced recently by Porschetek in Leeds following same symptoms as earlier posts. Mike[;)]

It seems I spoke too soon. The gauge dropped down to zero twice at the weekend. Each time it was for about 5 secs. I can't believe the gauge would fail like this. So clutching straws, I'll clean the terminals again.

And after a month with no smoke, three really bad smokey starts. It's starting to wind me up. I can't believe a 911 should be like this unless the engines warn out. And at 75k it shouldn't be.[]

Maybe I'll just leave it on the drive as a static display model!! [][:(]

Hi All past and present owners,

I've changed my sensor a couple of weeks back and all has been fine since. Thanks for all the advice. I will say it was a pain to actually undo the sensor and I found I had to buy a 19mm crow foot and get it machinned thinner to actually fit onto the nut. I had to remove the heat shield on the rocker cover and get to it from underneath the car instead of through the boot even though you can see it easily from on top. Oh and Richard I did buy your book but have to admit I have only had a quick flick through it so far.

Thanks Richard.
