oil pressure guage not working

Can someone help me to diagnose this problem? My oil pressure guage shoots up to above 5 before I start the engine, it used to bob around the 3 mark when idling but since I had the cam belt changed it just goes straight to 5. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds pretty normal - on a cold engine the gauge will shoot up to 4.5 or 5 when started. If it stays there even when the engine's hot it sounds like the wiring to the sender unit may have been disturbed.

I'm sure there's something about this on Clark's Garage under 'gauges'

It certainly shouldn't show 5 before the engine has started.

Mine is 5 at cold idle and approx 3 at hot idle.

Agree that it sounds like something has been disturbed / broken.

Mine is the same as mik's, only it sits at 3.5-4 at hot idle, only drops to 3 when very long hot idle in traffic or doddling along at slow speeds.

Take the two wires off the sender unit and earth each wire with the ignition on.

One of the wires will be your warning light and the other will be the gauge.

If the guage goes to zero when you earth the wire then the guage and wiring should be OK and it will be the connection of faulty sender.
