Oil pressure problem

I took my car on a 100 mile trip yesterday, engine temperature was OK and oil pressure showed between 4 and 5 bar as it always does when using over 3000 revs. The oil pressure rose and fell with the revs, as it should do. I know the oil level was fine before I set off. On the way home I stopped at a friends for about an hour and then got back in the car for a short drive home (about 6 miles). When I restarted the car the oil pressure showed 2 bar, and would not rise and fall with the revs. I stopped and checked the oil level, which was fine. I took it to 4000 revs (very briefly) but the pressure did not change. The engine temperature also did not go over it's normal level. I limped it home assuming the worst. Before I take the car to a garage is it possible that the pressure guage is faulty or can the oil pump fail suddenly like this ?? Help please .....![]

Almost certainly the sender, a pump failure is extremely unlikely. Check the terminals for their integrity and lightly tap the sender with a spanner you will probably see the gauge flicker, this confirms the problem, if it's not the sender it's then most likely to be a connection fault between the sender and the gauge , as your gauge is reading constantly 2 bar the gauge is getting a continuous current producing that result so it could well be a wiring fault, poor earth etc. check the gauge last if you still have a problem .

Thanks Bones,

That is rather more reassuring than I thought. Looks like I shall be doing some more tinkering this evening.[:)]
