Hello all! Please help - if poss!!?? Ok: 996 3.6 C2 (MY2003) 19k miles. Out for drive today - circa 90 miles - no excessive strain on car. Warning sound from dash + message "indicator failure" with picture of oil can. Looked to far right - oill pressure needle is on resting point! Temp. is fine, engine running fine, no trail of oil behind car (on motorway). Stopped car. Dipped oil - no probs. Turned ignition back on; oil pressure went up to 1.5 bar - without engine running! Got recovered home (OPC warranty - which ran out on 5th July!!!). Just re-tested and oil pressure on far-right still reads 1.2 bar!
Have you heard of/seen this before? Maybe a fuse?
I'm very grateful for any info you may have.
Adrian.

It sounds like the pressure sender is faulty to me. That's where I would start anyway. My brother had a similar problem with his C4 - the gauge would dip down to zero occasionally. A new sender fixed it. It isn't impossible to reach - it is on the top of the camshaft cover, on the drivers side, towards the back of the engine. I would check that the plug connection is secure first by taking it off and putting it back on. If not, I would change the sender. If that doesn't do it, I think you need professional help as it could be the instrument cluster itself that is causing the problem. If it is giving a reading with the engine stopped, then it won't be an actual oil pressure problem. Senders are about £30 from memory.

Hi Richard, Thanks very much for that. They've said that they'll recover the car to OPC Cardiff for me at 9am tomorrow - as a goodwill. My main worry was that they'll say that it's something more serious and get me to agree to another extended warranty - which I'm not going to do. I'm sort of committed to that now - due to the time. I'll let you know what happens, but I've said that I don't want to be charged 'til they let me know what's going on. I'll be in touch. Many thanks again. Adrian.

Hi Adrian, Same thing happened to me and it was the oil pressure sender. My car was OK to drive but i didn't want to risk it so got it in straight away.

Hi everyone - thanks for your replys. Yes it WAS the sender unit - and the car was 5 days out of warranty! It was recovered to my home and then onto OPC the next day - as a goodwill gesture. I called customer services and spoke to Martin Saunders. He agreed to pay half the bill. It all ended up costing me £62 - about £340 saved, if you take the recovery into account, so I'm pleased to say the least. However, (here we go) I'm astounded that a £60K car which is 4 years old and has covered 19k miles throws this sort of problem up! At £895 I'm not going to be renewing the warranty, I know it may be a risk - but it's one I'm willing to take. Thanks again. Adrian.
