Oil Pressure & Temp Gauges

New member
I'm messing around with the dash at the mo, installing an OBC.

However I've noticed that when I turn on the ignition that both gauges move off their rest positions.
The oil pressure reads about 1/2 to 3/4 Bar.
Is this normal as I've not started the engine yet but showing a pressure.

Thanks for any help, David.

Sounds like you have a faulty pressure switch.

It's in the engine bay at the rear. Just to the left of the rear right hand side intake manifold tube. It's normally gold ish in colour and has 2 wires connected to it.

Easy to change.....took me about 30 mins. Buy a genuine porsche one though as some people have had problems with the oem type ones

Hi Tim & Gaz, thanks for the responses.

It does look like the Sender is the problem.

On closer scrutiny it appears that it's the pressure side that moves more than the Temp gauge.

As for paying 2.5x the cost of a standard part just because it has Porsche part number, I don't think so.

Cheers, David.

I have to agree with Tim. I tried two after market senders. One worked for a week and the replacement didn't work at all so I gave up and bought a Porsche one which worked first time and has continued to work for the last couple of years without issues.

FYI here's a pic of the senders. Aftermarkets on left and middle. Porsche original on the right:

Hi Steve, where did you get your OEM's oil sender from?

Also I know that you fitted an OBC to your car. With regards to the temp sensor in the mirror, is the wiring already there and you just need the sensor, or did you have to run wires as well?

David.

The OEMs came from Berlyn Porsche Parts and are made by a company callled URO. The Porsche original is made by VDO.

I've had no success with the temperature display on the OBC. I've wired the mirror correctly AFAIK (they move and heat correctly) so I guess I've got a duff sensor in the mirror but I've not taken the mirror apart to check. However it could also be related to my OBC having originated from an early 3.3 turbo (it displays boost and the like). I just leave the display on speed all the time. Being a numpty I didn't realize the OBCs were MPH or KMH specific so I ended up with the KMH version.

Thanks for the info' Steve.
My trouble is that I trained as an electronics engineer, so I know there ain't much to these senders, but I hear what you say.

As for the Rev counter mine is also a turbo but the later one fitted on the 993.
I got the MPH one thanks to reading about your problem however I've found a problem with the backlight not working on mine and trying to fix this at the mo. The rennlist site gives useful info but not applicable to mine.

I've a few jobs backing up.

David

You need to run a pair of thin wires for the temp sensor from the obc plug up into the mirror....if you use a thicker cable then the resistance is too great and there is a voltage drop on the cable which results in weird temp being displayed. The wiring is not there from manufacture.

Up to you with regards to pressure sensor I can only advise on the trouble others have had. If you choose to ignore this then that's up to you.

Thanks Tim.

I have to take the drivers door mirror apart because something has come unclipped or broken so only adjustment in one plane is possible. I can hear the motor working so I hope it'll fix with a drop of Araldite. But good to know what I've got to get before the repair.
By the way increased diameter of copper cable equates with lower resistance and thereby lower potential drop.
These simple sensors work by changing their resistance to earth. Introducing more resistance will of course change the accuracy of the reading.
My temp on the OBC currently shows -40C because of very high resistance, an open circuit.

I assume that the sensor was also missing when you upgraded to an OBD. Did you need any special mounting pieces also or does the temp sensor just clip into place?

David.

It was along time ago i did mine.

But you need the following

964.612.909.01 wiring harness £10.26 (it has the plug you need for sensor)
928.641.142.00 sensor £27.01
911.612.817.00 cap £2.94 (covers the plug to stop water ingress)

The sensor clips into the cup mirrors without any bracket etc

Thanks very much Tim, much appreciated.

I'll order these bits before starting on the mirror.

Cheers David.

I've just been looking at the parts on the PET and see that the temp sender is actually mounted in the passenger door mirror. Is that where yours was installed?
Although there is no reason that that is the only place it can be mounted. I see that on a 993 it's in the front grill.
