Oil pressure...

Hmm, bit worried about this one..

When the engine is idling when cold, pressure is about 4.5 bar, and I know its meant to drop as the engine warms up, but what should the pressure be when driving along? mines only reading 3 bar or so... this seems a bit low to me....

Any thoughts?

From my experience...........

Nearly 5 when cold

3+ when really hot at idle

4 bar at moderate revs

Is it 3 at low revs and climbs with the revs?

Yes, it climbs from 3 bar to almost 4 bar on accelerayion, but never hits the magical 5 bar...

I'm also thinking the oil may be a bit thin for an engine thats done 200,000 miles...maybe i'll replace it with some 15/40, think its got 10/40 at the mo

hows your water and oil temperature Dick ? if its a little hotter than normal it will be less viscous My oil pressure went down a little and the water temp up when the garage put a new thermostat in which had a differant opening temperature .

Other things that might possibly influence the pressure is partially blocked oil filter causing oil to bypass the filter . Weak spring in the oil pressure relief valve. Restricted air flow over oil cooler .and of course worn oil pump. Hope that cheered ya up !

When mines hot and revving it maxes at 4.5 - 4.75 bar (4 at moderate revs) so I dont think you`ve too much a problem.

I had noticeably lower oil pressure with Mobil 1 10/40, 15/40 was a bit better and now use Royal Purple oil which has definitely improved the pressure (particularly when hot) and no leaks either. It also made my gearbox silent [;)]

Magnatech was fine too when I first bought it but everyone on here tells me not to use it.

I am sure others will come along soon with oil recommendations but I do suggest you do a search for `oil`

thanks for the replies guys, i've just checked the service records, and its currently running magnatec 0/40w which i reckon is far too thin, will be changing it real soon for some thicker oil....

Magnatec seems to draw alot of divided opinions. PH Sportscars always seem to swear by it. Also the viscosity of the oil seems to draw many divided opinions too. However from your descriptions it sounds like your car is behaving fairly normally. 4 - 5 bar at cold idle and around 3 bar at warm idle typical and 4 - 5 bar under throttle is also typical.

Oh dear...it seems to be getting worse.....now at cold idle its 3.5 ish bar, although when revving when cold it climbs to just over 4 bar, but when on the move the pressure is at 3 bar tops, although warm idle is 2 bar.....

gonna put some 15/40 or even 20/50 in at the weekend and see what happens...

Try the 15/40 and let us know what happens then. It's what I run in my S2, and that has yet to drop below about 2.5bar on VERY HOT idle on a VERY HOT day after a protracted thrash. (Although long periods in traffic have almost as much effect.)

Oli.

Dick, those symptoms sound very similar to the oil pump receiving intermittant drive. I've heard it mentioned a few times over the years that the bolt securing the pump to the crank can become loose if not torqued up correctly and therefore the pump slips.

That's my non-technical understanding anyway, you may want to get it checked out
