Oil pressure

Whats the general oil pressure reading on your 964

I'm currently 4-5 on full power but dipping quite quick when the clutch is down and idle is arround 1-1.2 ish

John,

I'd agree with that. If the oil gets REALLY hot I've seen mine dip even below 1 occasionally on idle but as long as it's up to the 4-5 mark over 2500 revs or so I'm happy. Other comments I've seen over the years would imply slightly higher (particularly at idle) would be better but I wonder if there is some margin of error in the pressure sender anyway. I've made a mental note to get JZM to check it when it's in for it's next service.

Regards

Dave

Very similar behaviour on mine. Just below 1.5 at idle when hot and up near the top at other times.

Sounds about the same as mine to.

1.5 at tickover, rising to 4-5 at 3-4k rpm. But mine raises further when being pushed that little bit further, just over the 5 bar mark.

Cool, I think I'm getting a bit para now I've clocked 125,000 miles!!

I couldn't remember what it was like when i bought it so had nothing to compair. It just seemed a little too low for me but if every ones about the same then I'll stopp stressing.

Thanks

Noticed mine has been dropping nearer to 1 than 1.5 over the last few days in traffic as the weather has been very hot. Temp guage has been up to just above 9 o'clock.

No oil light so seems OK.

Ian.

I just discussed the heat thining the oil with the other half - spooky.

In her Fiat coup the oil pressure stays high even on idle. has a 3 number mark. Stays at 3 full pressure during driving, dip clutch and it will drop to 2.25/2.5.

I'm going into the local guy to have a chat on Monday

It's not a reliable comparison to gauge two different engine designs against one another, your engine sounds fine, the gauge or sender may even be an issue if it's dropping off the scale, more likely the hot weather. What grade and make of oil are you using and when did you last change it? If you want more info on oils read the 'technical articles' section of the forum.

Mine is exacly the same. I have a 93 964 that has only covered 61K miles. Had a pressure check conducted all was fine. I have also checked the oil level on the dip stick again all was fine 3/4 up to full.

Another newbie question I'm afraid...

In my 964 sometimes the oil pressure is really high ~5+, but sometimes it seems to be 4. I just don't understand why its different - even on the same day! On both journies engine would be at normal operating temperature [8|]

mine runs at 5 above 2,5 k revs and idles at 1.5 when hot 146k on the clock and no rebiulds yet top or bottomand no leaks shouldent have said that im temping fate [:)]

As part of an oil thermostat repair I've changed the viscosity of the oil and this problem seems to have gone away. Previously a very thick 10W-60 Castrol Edge was used and now I've changed to 5W-40, Fuchs Supersyn. Its either thick oil 'upsetting' the pressure valve or the effect of clean oil (although the previous oil wasn't very old, < 2k miles).

Cheers, Lee
