I think that you should work on the principle that it should correspond with the revs
e.g
4k revs = 4 on the druck

not 100% on this - I'm sure someone will confirm shortly
 
I was told the same about revs to oil pressure, seemed to ring true on mine.

eg 3ooorpm = 3 bar oil pressure etc etc
 
I had my top end rebuilt last year, with new pistons and cylinders, always have it serviced every 6k miles and my pressure is around 2.5 while idling but it goes off the scale whilst cruising!

Nothing has been reported as being wrong with the engine when it has been serviced, it pulls fine right across the rev rand and it doesn't smoke....

Does anyone think I have a problem?

I need some technical help for my Dec.88 3.2

It is regarding my oil pressure gauge, here is the info:

1/ oil pressure warning light works fine
2/ oil level gauge works perfect (new one fitted 2 months ago)
3/ oil temperature ok as well
4/ all the terminals have been cleaned

Questions:

1/ is my problem the oil pressure sensor in engine
2/ is my problem the actual oil pressure gauge on dashboard
(goes to 5 when you start the engine and stays there, goes to 0 when you stop engine; if I take the the connection of the actual oil pressure sensor same thing i.e. 5 when you start and 0 when you stop, in both cases stays at the top with no movement at all)

Any help would be appreciated, thnaks.

Hi Dave,

I have an engine that has done 125k and the readings you show are the same as mine so I do not think you have any problems. My local specialist garage say that this is normal and they have been servicing my car for 5 years now

Are you saying when you disconnect the sender (the one at the front of the engine & to the right) that the gauge in the car still reads 5bar?

What pressure do you get with the engine not running but the ignition on?

Thanks for e-mail, due to line problems could not reply earlier, very frustrating as I would like the car on the road..

Yes when I disconnect the sender the gauge still reads 5 bar engine not running and ignition on.

At present I am waiting for a new sender which is on back order (after Bert's comments),. The one on the car is the original. As said before the sender for the light works ok.

Well, if you get the needle trying to bend without the engine running and the sender disconnected then it would seem the sender is not the problem. Did you also try disconnecting the oil pressure switch as well? Try that too and see what the gauge tells you with the engine off but ignition on (I'm wondering if you have confused the two devices).

The switch for the warning light is to the rear of the engine and slightly to the right.

I take it that when you turn off the ignition the gauge returns to zero.

If you still get the needle bending after disconecting the switch then you must have a wiring fault or a faulty gauge.

Did it ever work properly? I am wondering if someone wired it up like this to sell a car with hardly any oil pressure...

Hi Nathan,

At last I have been reunited with my 911 and of course still with my problem. I have tried a few things after your comments. Well, if the sender and oil pressure switch are both disconnected in the engine bay, the needle still goes to the top, this with ignition on, engine not running. Ignition off, needle down. Since day one the car has been great and the oil pressure gauge always worked fine according to the revs and driving conditions, cannot fault it., so in theory no problem with the wiring. As you say it would seem the sender is not the problem. Two questions though:

1/ how does one check that the gauge actually works or not (is on my desk now), I do not want to buy a new one if not needed
2/ If I want to change the sender with a 24mm spanner how do I do it as there is no room, it seems that Porsche do not want you to take it off unless of course you bend the spanner.

I had a wrd today with a Porsche specialist and he thinks that it is the sender, what do you think.

I will disconnect my sender tomorrow and let you know what happens with my gauge when the ignition is on.

When I disconnect No. 43 in the diagram above, my gauge pegs to maximum when the ignition is on & the engine not running.

Just in case you have an ohm meter I got 35ohms on my 911 & 190 on my 930 so either of those or in between should be fine. Let us know what yours reads if you can. I noticed the gauge in my 911 does not actually go to zero. I could not test the 930 gauge as the car is not fully reassembled yet but I think it should be fine.

Thanks for all the info very helpful.

I did take the actual gauge to a Porsche specialist and tried it on another car, it did work, good news for me.
Anyway yesterday a removed the oil sender (no. 43) and fitted the new one. I had to remove the pipe on the right hand side making the job easy. The actual sender was very tight on to (no. 46), I needed the help of a vice to undo it.

Once the new one fitted, tried it and it worked fine, end of my saga.
