I don't know if the seal can be replaced without removing the pump for sure, but I think it can. Ideally you don't want to disturb the pump because it seals across a face with a join in it and you might get a leak after it's removed.

hi

thats what i am afraid of, if the pump has to come off then you have to slacken the front sump bolts (guaranteed to leak if you do that)

Thinking about it, it's the main front crank oil seal and I'm 90% sure I had that replaced on my S2 cab (twice in fact). The oil pump was never off that car.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It isn't just the sump, there is a "girdle" that holds the bottom shell bearings and that forms the bottom part of the front face that the pump seals against, with the block forming the upper part.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

hi

did you need to take the radiator out to get a gear puller on, or if i remove the fan will that do

You do not need to remove the oil pump.

You also should replace the oil pump drive sleeve and the oil pump drive sleeve o-ring.

I would also change the balance shaft oil seals, mylar washers, camshaft oil seal, chamshaft rear guard sealing ring.

I would also suspect the lower balance shaft as often looking like the crank seal has failed, as the oil runs along a path that makes it drip out of the crank area.

Removing the radiator depends on how big your gear puller is.. sometimes you can get it off without pullers. I tend to find that one in 10 requires the use of a puller, the rest come off with either pulling by hand or with lots of penetrating oil and much wiggling. A puller should be the last resort.
