oil pump

Are oil leaks from the left hand side of the oil pump common?
Does any body know if you can remove the oil pump without dropping the oil pan?
I'm trying to work out if an oil leak has been coming from the O-ring around the
lower balance shaft casing or the left hand edge of the oil pump.

TIA

Paul

I wouldnt say they are common, but do happen.
Yes im sure it can be replaced without dropping the "sump" oil pan. BUT theres quite a lot of stuff to remove to gain access to the affected area.
It could just be the lower balance shaft seal as youve said...
I had my seals replaced by my indie mechanic...
Hope that helps you out.??

I have the covers & belts off, what else would I need to remove oil pump, I can see
2 bolts going through oil sump and a few holding it to front of block. So its those bolts
and then the oil pump will pull straight off? I was worried there might be a lip on the
pump which would catch on oil sump.

If it is the same as the 944, the sump does have to be dropped to get the oil pump off. The pump is sealed to the block with Loctite 574, so if you do take it off, be prepared that you'll have to clean it all off and re-apply.

When you say the oil pump. Im guessing your talking about the area under the oil filter.??
As im pretty sure you dont have to drop the sump to gain access.
Im sure my indie didnt when he fixed my oil leak...

I think the 968 will be the same as the 944, in which case the procedure is here.

Just checked, 968 has the same oil pump part number as all 944's from very early on, 944.107.014.11, so above procedure should be ok.

In that region it could be the oil filter housing leaking, oil runs down the block and over the lower balance shaft housing and that corner ot the block. Mine leaks oil from the gasket between the housing and the block, it`s quite difficult to see the source of the leak without getting the car on a ramp. Once all cleaned off I could see it seeping from above the balance shaft housing and crank area.

Quite correct, after checking it wasn't coming from the oil pump,
I thought it was the big o-ring at back of balance shaft housing,
changed that, still leaking. I have now finally tracked it down to
the oil filter housing. Had to get it warmed up with power steering
pump and some brackets removed to actually be able to see the
bugger leaking though.
Bits on order to fix it this weekend hopefully!
